Dear Mario and Diane,
Im saddened beyond words to have heard from Theresa about the death of Armando. I remember him when he was little, when I had visited you in Colorado long ago. I read of the work he has been doing, and how clearly he was loved, cherished, highly respected nationally and internationally, and of his plans. What a lovely smile. Its hard to imagine what it is like for you, and there are no words. He was clearly a man who lived his life well, with passion, enthusiasm, humor, in service, and with much love. I wish I had known him as the man he became. He clearly touched so many people. My heart goes out to you, and my thoughts, love and best wishes are with you.
Abrazos,

Mando was a young man of remarkable inner and outer beauty. His spirit was so rich that his loss feels as if it impoverishes not only those who loved him, but indeed, the world.
Diane and Mario: In this dark time, please be comforted by the joy and vitality Mando brought to so many others, and, too, by the exceptional gifts you gave him both genetically and through your loving attention as wise and devoted parents. You gave your son a wonderful life, the best any child could hope for. And from that, we all benefited, because Mando's very presence was an encouragement toward the best in human nature and an invitation to see the goodness and possibility that surround us. Such lives – however brief -- are a rare gift to all who are touched by them.
Many grieve with you, but thank you, too, for giving this struggling world such a bright and beautiful spirit.

Diane and Mario,
We love you, we love Mando, our Mando. The outpouring of love and prayers tells us he was an amazing person. We knew this, I now realize so does the rest of the world.
My words for Mando
Beautiful Mando
...a pure soul
Walked the earth for only a short time....
We love him
spellbound by his energy, joy, smile
That smile
Those eyes
AND THE CURLS!
We watched him grow
From Loteria to citizen of the world.
And the world took him.....
The person of Mando
Pure delight
Bright
Light
Fully Brilliant in the loving embrace of God.

When I think of your son, I remember the little boy with the most beautiful jet black curls and large expressive eyes whom we met at Pat and Arturo's home. My late husband Alfonso and I were so impressed with how bright and talented he seemed to be. I can imagine that platitudes will ring empty but judging from the comments I read regarding this trajedy, it seems to me that you both raised a beautiful young man who brought more joy in his short years than some people do in a lifetime. May the memory of his wonderful personality help to carry you through this most difficult loss. I will keep you both in my prayers.
Sincerely,

I am so sorry to hear this tragic news. Being only 23 myself I can't imagin life being cut so short. My heart goes out to the Montano family at this difficult time. I can't imagine how broken their hearts must feel. It brings some comfort to know that we can all look foward to the time when God will wipe out every tear from our eyes and death will be no more; neither will mourning, pain, nor outcry be anymore. The former things will have passed away.

Our son worked with Mondo on the Scarlet and Black, and over the years his name simply became part of the Grinnell lore brought home and shared with our family. Now, we watch with supportive arms, but a heart wrenching helplessness, as our Grinnell/Colorado Springs contingency in St Louis grapples with the loss of a friend they hold so dear. Mondo's friends are such a testimony to his deep impact on this world, for each one of them has been forever enriched by his friendship. As parents, we mourn for and with you. What a beautiful child you have shared with all of us. With prayers, tears and offers of support,
Anita

To mario and diane's families,
We were deeply saddened by the news of the loss of mandito. To us, it is a double loss: so many accomplishments at an early age (shows his determination to succeed and also strong parental support) and also, having known Mario since our childhood days in loma de la Cruz, eagle pass, tx. He left us while he was doing what he wanted to do.
Our prayers to the parents, Mario and Diane and to families of both. From the ramirez family

I was introduced to Mando in the dining hall last spring, completely in passing. He always greeted me after that, with as much warmth as he would a good friend. He was a rare kind of person, one who touched everyone he met so easily and naturally. I hardly knew you, Mando, but I miss you.

Blessings, comfort and peace as you travel this journey. I know of Armondo, from my daughter another 2012 Grinnellian. She reports he was happy, positive, bright and just "such a great guy, we loved when he hung out in our house, I don't know why this would happen,he was going to do great things"...I reminded her yesterday, that it is obvious thruout the country, that he has already done great things, making a difference and touching many. Sending you love, prayers and comfort.
