Marion Cunningham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 11, 2012.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Marion Cunningham, the home-cooking champion whose legacy can be found in the food-spattered pages of "Fannie Farmer" cookbooks in kitchens across America, has died at age 90.

Cunningham, who had been ill for some years, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease, a family friend told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Best known for her revisions of the classic "The Fannie Farmer Cookbook," in 1979 and again in 1990, Cunningham wrote several other books, including "Lost Recipes." She also hosted a television series, "Cunningham & Company," that aired on the Food Network.

Though she moved in rarefied circles, Cunningham resisted trendiness. She was an ardent supporter of the humble iceberg lettuce and specialized in simple, straightforward recipes.

Remembering a Beautiful Soul...
Today would've been your 92nd. We still miss you everyday but we know you are happy where you are now.
Happy Birthday our dear Marion!

I am writing for my mother, Maryon Greenough, to send her condolences. Mom met Marion through James Beard when he was teaching summer classes at the coast in Oregon. My mother assisted Mr. Beard as she was the home ec teacher whose kitchens were the center of the classes. Mom spoke fondly of Marion, and admired her way with food. She said Marion was really pleasant to be around and treated a home ec teacher as a colleague just as she did James Beard. My sympathies also go out to the family.

My mother and Marion were great friends. Marion autograhed every one of her cookbook's for me. Most are held together by rubber bands because they are used so much. She was an inspiration to me.

So sad to hear of her passing and very sorry that she suffered Alzheimers in her last years. I will always remember her easy-going style and great sense of humor when I took cooking classes with her at her Walnut Creek home in the early 70's. I don't think any of us realized she would become famous but I'm glad she was able to share her wonderful self with the world.

Ms. Cunningham,

Thank you for guiding me through the most elegant, creative and flavorful recipes. I cooked, but your guidance turned me into a single, practical gourmet "foodie" long before the term was coined.

Thank you for your genius.

Will miss your wonderful insight and knowledge.

RIP

Marion Cunningham's family and loved ones, condolences. A loss to thousands of kitchens and hearts. Indeed my 2 thumb-worn paperbacks, and even my hardback Fanny Farmer, will have not only recipe spatters, but teardrops spilling across the pages. It has her cookbook more than all the rest, that I turned to the most.
