George Hickman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2012.
SEATTLE (AP) - George Hickman, one of the original Tuskegee airmen and a longtime usher at University of Washington and Seattle Seahawks game, has died at age 88.

His wife, Doris, confirmed Monday that he died early Sunday morning in Seattle.

Hickman was one of the country's first black military pilots and ground crew members who fought in World War II.

In 2007, he and other Tuskegee airmen traveled to Washington, D.C., to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation's highest civilian honor. In 2009, he attended President Barack Obama's inauguration as a special guest.

Hickman was a fixture at Seattle sporting events. He personalized the often anonymous job of ushering fans to their seats, and most regulars to UW basketball and football games knew him by first name. He was perhaps the best known person at Husky Stadium.

"Things will be a little different right before we go out on the court not being able to shake the hand of George Hickman," UW basketball coach Lorenzo Romar tweeted Monday.

UW football coach Steve Sarkisian also tweeted: "He represented the UW and the Tuskegee Airmen with class. I will always appreciate how he treated my family."

"He was just a wonderful man," Doris Hickman said Monday of her husband.

The grandson of slaves, Hickman nurtured an interest in aviation as a curious boy gazing up at the sky above St. Louis.

That passion evolved from buying cheap model airplanes to joining the segregated pilot training program in Tuskegee, Ala., and later to a nearly three-decade long career at Boeing in Seattle.

He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-45, which trained African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft, and was part of the graduating class of 1944, according to an Army profile. He graduated from the airman program as a crewman and served in Europe as a flight mechanic during WWII.

"There was nothing better in the world. In tha t biplane, the guy wires between the wings were like musical instruments," he told the News Tribune of Tacoma in a 2011 interview.

But he also recalled in a 2009 Associated Press interview the humiliation of being pushed off sidewalks in the South and spit at while in uniform.

As a cadet captain, he was effectively blocked from flying when he called out white superior officers for the mistreatment of a fellow black cadet. "I felt like I had really been mistreated," he told the AP.

In 1955, he met and married his wife in Amarillo, Texas, while volunteering with her mother at a local library, according to an Army profile.

Doris Hickman was drawn to her husband's character when they first met.

He moved to Seattle in 1995 to work for Boeing and ultimately was in charge of accounting Boeing training equipment. He retired in 1984.

George use to call me sunshine but little did he know that he was my sunshine. The only reason I smiled so big when I saw him was because I looked forward to getting that warm hug and I was excited to hear what words of wisdom he had for me. Hearing all the stories of how he touched everyone's life motivates me to live everyday to the fullest and to treat others with kindness. God has taken George but he lives on in all of us, he will never be forgotten. George is looking down on us happy and overjoyed that he successfully achieved his goal,he left an imprint our hearts. LOVE YOU!

It was my privilege to teach with George's wife Doris for several years at Madrona Elementary. I had great respect for her as a professional educator and always enjoyed her students. I regret that I did not know George. He must have been a true light in the world and now will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to the Hickman family.

He was the kindness, most inspiring man I know. He always took the time to make people feel welcomed. I enjoyed visiting with him during sporting events.

George was a great person who made people feel as if their Dad or Grandfather were standing right next to them ( even if they did not have one). He always gave the best advice, because everything he said came from the heart. I meet him with my Dad (Bob Sanford) when I was a kid and when my Dad and myself worked at the UW. It was one of the best things in my life to know such a great man. His parents would be proud to know that he brought together all types of races, creeds and religions to make this a better world. You will be greatly missed!

Wow still a shock to learn that you have gone on glory to rest in eternity. There is so much that could be said about you. An amazing man with incredible knowledge and wisdom. I appreciate your kindness and the long talks of wisdom that you passed along to me. I am not sure that I have met a more meek and humble man. God has truly called home one his best. I know he met you with favor and said, "Job well done thy good and faithful servant." May God comfort the Hickman family and give them strength during this time. Thanks for being a blessing in my life!

I would like to send my condolences to my 5th grade teacher @ View Ridge Elementary in Northeast Seattle, Mrs. Hickman, as well as her children - especially Vincent (since he was roughly our age @ the time, so we could definitely relate!), whom I vividly remember she spoke of often while telling family stories to the class, as well as George himself. Being that young, it would have been impossible to realize the significance of Mr. Hickman's ("my husband, George", as Doris would say) place in history - we had no idea. He sounds like he was a truly fascinating gentleman!

To George's family: our prayers are with you during this time of great loss. Thank you for sharing George with us. He was, and is, an honored member of our "Team Purp" UW Softball family. We so loved seeing him at the top of the stairs at every home game, and were delighted when he would stop by for a plate of tailgate food. What a joy it was to know him. His legacy will live on in all of you, and for that we are so grateful.

George, it was a little hard working the first volleyball games without your smile. Your presence was felt by all! You will be missed but not forgotten. You have touched the hearts of so many athletes, coaches and so many others there!! Your sacrifices for your dreams will live on. George made me smile every time I saw him at a UW Women's Basketball or UW Softball game. And I will always remember how his smile could light Hec Ed all by itself. May our joyful memories of George bring a small measure of comfort to his family in knowing that he was much admired and loved by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Back in 90's, i was an athletic trainer with the UW Huskies. I had just arrived to work preparing for one the women's basketball games. I was coming across the gym floor and little sad. George said to me - "what's goin on ms. cheryl". I said "i am a little bummed because my VCR had eaten my favorite movie" "what movie is that?" George replied. "The Tuskegee Airman" I said. He just smiled at me and went his way. Two weeks later - the Huskies play ball again in Hec Ed. George comes to me with a movie in his hand and said "Here I recorded this for you!" I was excited and happy. Did I mention George's voice sounds just like my dad's?? Anyway i went home after the game and started to play my movie(i had purchased a NEW VCR by then). Did i mention that i have watched this move at least 20 times. BUT this time it was different! At the end of the movie - George had put on footage of the Seattle Chapter Display of the Tuskegee Airman - and there was GEORGE!!!! Holy Cow! What an awesome surprise. Today, I will watch it again and remember to pay it forward. Love you George!!

Today I took my 5 year old son to Carkeek Park to fly a kite for the first time. It was shaped like an airplane and as the kite soared above the sand and Sound I told him about my friend George, who also flew planes.

I told him how special George was not only because he flew planes but because he was always so kind and knew how to lift people's spirits.

If you ask my son today what he want to do when he grows up, he will tell you that he wants to fly planes. My hope, is that he is kind and lifts spirits like my friend, George.

Love you, George. You continue to inspire.

When I think of the legacy that George Hickman has left his own family and his "Husky" and "Seahawks" families,I am comforted by the thought that his great spirit will live on in the thousands of people he touched profoundly in his life by being the guy that remembered names, inquired about family and how things were going and then really listened to the answers, by a positive outlook in dark days and bright. Out of respect and appreciation, I'll try to carry George's example with me and apply it in my life. My condolences to all who had the pleasure of a warm handshake and hug from this great man, and especially my thoughts are with his family who he loved so greatly.

Hickman Family.
I worked at the UW for 25 years and 10 more after retiring taking care of equipment at the Stadium and Pavilion and there was George. What a great man he was. We traded chili secrets and the good stuff we put in it. George always gave me a hug and said "God bless you and your family". A true gentleman. I could babble on and on about George.
May God's blessing be upon the entire Hickman family.

George and his family, thank you for all you have done for our country, for the Dawg family and for the Seattle community. You truly blessed my life with your vibrant smile and gentle voice. My prayers are with your family and friends. But we rejoice in the life you lived. Thank you George for making a difference in the lives of thousands.

George, myself, Melissa, and all of our family will miss you but never forget you. It has been an honor to know you, and work with you. I remember meeting you at the Kingdome and working with you during all of the sport events from 1986 to 2002, at the U. of W.. My youngest daughters were 2yrs and 1yr when they met you at the triple A basket ball tournament being held at the Seattle center. Melissa and I got married and you were such an inspiration, and mentor. She works for the U W M C, and you were such a teacher, and what a math teacher you were. That's mentioned to express what a good example you have been. You made a real difference in all of our lives, and we will always be grateful. As our long time friend, we wish for you to R. I. P. . For the Hickman family our condolences go to you, thank you for sharing George with us. George you are a real hero forever thank you for your service and contribution to life. I am saddened at the loss of a Titan of a Fraternity Brother. He has been someone that was a true mentor to me. He was available to do what ever I asked of him if it was in his power to do it. I am glad that we had the opportunity to honor him at our Preview for the "Red Tails" movie, even though he wasn't there. I was glad we could honor him as one of our cherished seniors. I personally will miss him more that anyone knows. I will remember all of the discussions we had that helped me to be a better leader. To the Hickman family, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing Brother Hickman with us. And I know that one day, I will see him again...on the "Golden Shores"...rest well my Brother...rest well...

I was introduced to George by a dear friend in November 2011. You see, I'm an Air Force officer too, and George was kind enough to come out and have lunch and share a bit of his wonderful life with me on a cold and rainy Seatle day. Although we never met Doris, I know you are a beautiful woman to have shared your life with such a wonderful man. God bless!

I remember George for his kind and gentle spirit. The Hickman's had a unique quality of Class. I always felt comfortable around them, and they always did the right thing. I grew up as a childhood friend of Doris's & George's son, Vince. I would often visit Vince's home as a young boy walking three short blocks to lower Capitol Hill. One day, on my way to the Hickman's, I (white) was threatened and chased by a group of troubled (Black) youth living in a group home a block from the Hickman's. When I made it to the Hickmans, and Vince & I told George, he got upset and confronted the Home & it's occupants. I was amazed! George & Doris, always setting an example and doing the right thing. Thank you for positively impacting my life and the lives of so many others! In the years to follow it was always special to see George around town at sporting events. He would always stop to say hello. I love the Hickmans; they're a very special family. God bless George, Doris, his family, especially Vince, and all of their friends. Doris says it best, "George was a wonderful man!" God bless his soul.

Thank you Sir, for your service, for what you endured so that others would not have to. Thank you for the talk to had with our son, Xavier, and the inspiration you gave him. God bless you and yours and thank you for all that you were and the blessing you will always be to all who had an opportunity to meet you, and all whose lives were changes for the better because of you.
