Princess Ragnhild Obituary
The palace says Ragnhild died Sunday at her home in Rio de Janeiro. The cause of death was not given.
The eldest child of King Olav and Crown Princess Martha, Ragnhild could not ascend to the Norwegian throne because the Scandinavian country's Constitution only allowed male succession.
In 1953, Ragnhild married a commoner, Norwegian businessman Erling Sven Lorentzen, and the couple settled in Brazil.
The royal household says a funeral service will be held at the palace but the date and time have not yet been determined.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Princess Ragnhild. I was named after her. My parents were born and grew up in Feda, Norway and immigrated to the U.S. before I was born in 1934.

My condolences to her family.
I am a third generation Norwegian American. There are not very many of us full blooded Norwegians of my age, 76. My mother's heritage was more fair skinned and lighter hair. Her mother's last name was Legard from the Bergen area and her father's family, Sather, were from the Oslo area. My father's mother and father were from northern Norway. He was more dark skinned, blonde as a little boy that turned to darker hair. Their last names were Halversen and Roisen. I have lighter hair and beige skin. I am proud to be of all Norwegian heritage. I have always wanted to visit Norway, but the cost is too much for us. I understand that the most beautiful time in Norway is the last of July and first of August. Some day I hope to find DVD films of all of Norway to watch on our TV.
When mother was 100, I contacted a very nice man from the Norwegian Embassy in America and he was on his way to Norway. He made arrangements for a congratulations from the king to be sent to mother. Her fondest wish was to make it to 100 like her father. She made it to 101. I hope to follow in her foot steps. She had a sweet spirit and was beloved by all who knew her, most probably like Princess Ragnhild.
