Jackie Guthrie Obituary
Jackie Guthrie had inoperable cancer and died Sunday at the couple's winter home in Sebastian, Florida, according to an obituary released by Arlo Guthrie's record label. The couple had recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary.
In a Facebook posting, Guthrie says his relationship with his wife was "a very great love."
"We didn't always like each other," he wrote. "From time to time there were moments when we'd have our bags packed by the door. But, there was this great love that we shared from the moment we met - a recognition - It's YOU! And we would always return to it year after year, decade after decade and I believe life after lifetime."
Jackie Guthrie was from Salt Lake City and grew up in Malibu, California. She met Arlo Guthrie in 1968 while working as a cashier at the Troubadour, the Hollywood nightclub th at was an epicenter for folk music at the time. Before they'd even met, Jackie walked into the dressing room and told Arlo's step brother that she would marry Arlo, according to the obituary, released Monday by Guthrie's label, Rising Son Records.
The next year, the couple purchased a 250-acre property called "The Farm" that the family still owns in Washington, in western Massachusetts. They were married on the front lawn in October of that year.
The couple raised four children, and in recent years the family toured together, with Jackie Guthrie working as the videographer. This past summer, the family toured to celebrate the centennial birthday of Arlo's father, folk singer Woody Guthrie, and Jackie became so weak she could barely hold up the camera, according to the obituary. In early September, she was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer.
On his website, Arlo Guthrie said his wife called her family to her bedside early Sunday and died later that mornin g.
On his Facebook page, Arlo Guthrie said he's cancelling or postponing some upcoming shows and will begin a planned tour in Canada next week.
Jackie Guthrie is survived by her four children with Arlo Guthrie; her daughter with singer David Crosby; and 10 grandchildren.

I am a Massachusetts native Bedford. I grew up with folk music, I watched all the Arlo/Pete Seeger concerts, before Pete and Jackie passed. I am glad to see the tradition lives on, with Arlo and his family. They sound great! I see he recently got remarried. God bless both of you! We have seen a lot the last few years, things that we never thought possible. We need Arlo’s inspiration to weather the storm. God bless America. We need to get back to moving forward

I was so disappointed to learn that you were not home when my friend Chuck Clute brought me to your house to meet you. We had so much fun spending the afternoon with her that I forgot about you. Guthries, all. I am remembering Jackie today on the birthday of my sister Patricia who also died too young in 2012. She had to suffer my continual playing of 'Alice's Restaurant' when I was 16 and she was 12. Finally, our dad let me play the album on his Motorola console stereo/mono cabinet turntable for the whole family on Thanksgiving. That old man loved that song, an old SeaBee from WWII, who ran a flag up the pole every morning at our house in Castalia, Ohio. He and I argued over dinner every night about the Vietnam War and why, if he fought in the War to End Wars, why were we living through another one? I worry that my arguing caused my little sister pain that lead, eventually, to her passing. But I took her and my other little sister to several of Arlo's and Pete's concerts. But, and my point is, I stole the photo of Jackie in her wedding dress from the Time magazine sidebar about their marriage. That girl was BEAUTIFUL!! And still is. Love you all, and my sister too. Thanks for keeping the legacy site open so we can remember Miss Jackie.

Hello Arlo, my name is Randy Benoit. I doubt if you would remember me. I played bass for you at 2 high school performances. I think it was 82' and 83'. I forget what school. I've been a paraplegic since Aug 04' the good of this is I can use my arms & my brain. but that's not important. what is, is life & death. I am so sorry of your loss... We have lived in the same times as Jackie and Arlo, we married in 1969,
we named our son Arlo....we never stopped listening to the music...and playing it to the children...and we are so sorry to hear about Jackie.
We live in England, and never met or saw a concert, but the words of songs have been so important to us over the years......so, in a way, you have been here with us, all this time.

I too lost a loved one to Cancer.
It was my daddy John L Russell Sr. I know the feeling you are going through because I've been there myself. The Lord taketh and the Lord giveth you will see her again one day in heaven just as I will my daddy. She would want you to keep on writing songs , performing your music and entertaining the people who love you. I have been listening to your music all of my life and it never gets old. In 1973, after high school graduation, a friend and I hitchhiked from Texas to Arlo's farm in Washington, Mass. We walked up to the house and saw Jackie with the kids in tow, Arlo, and some of their friends cavorting in the yard. Jackie invited us to dinner and to spend the night, insisting over Arlo's objections. Arlo said that a couple "freaks" like us should be in Baja California, rather than Massachusetts. But, he relented, and they put us up for two nights. Jackie made spaghetti, Arlo played guitar, and we all sang. They both were very kind, but she exuded love.

Visited Stockbridge area this weekend for the first time. Stopped at the church and Arlo's bus was parked next to the church. It was so quiet and I couldn't fathom all the memories Jackie and Arlo had there. A great experience. Goodnight, Jackie.

Arlo and family. Deepest regrets for the loss of Jackie. I knew you briefly in Waialua during the 70's on Crozier DR. Jackie amazed me at how sweet and warm she always was. Saw you in Austin and took you to your hotel after the Armadillo concert. I loved her too. She will always be a sweet, sweet soul!
