Galina Vishnevskaya Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 11, 2012.
MOSCOW (AP) - Russian opera diva Galina Vishnevskaya, who conquered audiences all over the world with her rich soprano, has died. Vishenvskaya, widow of famed cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, was 86.

Moscow's Opera Center, which Vishnevskaya created, said the singer died Tuesday in the Russian capital. It didn't give the cause.

Vishnevskaya joined Moscow's Bolshoi Theater in 1952, making her debut as Tatiana in Yevgeny Onegin. She performed dozens of soprano roles in Russian and European opera classics.

She made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Aida in 1961 and first sang Liu in Turandot in La Scala in 1964.

From 1955 and until his death in 2007, Vishnevskaya was married to Rostropovich.

They frequently performed together, and used their star status in the Soviet Union to help friends in trouble, including writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn whom they sheltered at their dacha when he was facing official reprisals.

After Solzhenitsyn was expelled from the country, Vishnevskaya and Rostropovich left the Soviet Union with their two daughters in 1974. They lived in Paris and then Washington, and were stripped of their Soviet citizenship in 1978.

They returned to Russia after the Soviet collapse and became involved in public activities and charitable work.

Vishnevskaya, survived by her two daughters, will be buried Friday at Moscow's Novodevichy Cemetery alongside her husband.

President Vladimir Putin sent his condolences, praising the singer's "remarkable talent, strong will, nobleness and self-dignity."

My very best and sympathies. I too will treasure the amazing voice, and your wonderful mother. Of course I was able to meet many times after a concert and it didn't take long your wonderful father knew me by name of many wonderful performances at least I thought. I too will remember my first rehearsal of the Verdi Requiem @ at the end of the first NSO season and the Benjamin Britten War Requiem as well. I will always treasure. I still have the program of the War Requiem. Regards.
With love. Paul.

May the family forever be blessed by God in Heaven, for He has said,"He has set a day in which he purposes to judge the inhabited earth in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and he has furnished a guarantee to all men in that he has resurrected him from the dead."---acts 17:31.......~d~

????e?a ? µ??µ? a?t?? ? µ??µ?. May her memory be eternal. One of the most amazing voices and personalities of the 20th century - spent so many years seeking her recordings (which were very hard to find in the US) and she will always remain one of my favorite sopranos. My best friends and I would eagerly play the heavily damaged LPs that made it to the US, having survived from before they were banished from the USSR - it was like the quest for gold for many years. Like another guest, my first recording was the Requiem - and the "Libera me" was devastatingly beautiful - the voice of an angel. I was too young to have seen her live but just hearing the recordings was and still remains exhilarating. May the blessings of Christ the Saviour through the intercessions of our most pure, blessed, and glorious Lady, Maria, the Mother of God be with her family in this time of sorrow.

While still a young man, I owned a wonderful recording of Vishnevskaya singing the soprano part in the Verdi Requiem. I loved that recording and over the years it became a beautiful addition to the soundtrack of my life. I will miss her.
