Patsy Sutton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 9, 2013.
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Patsy Sutton, the matriarch of a family of college basketball coaches, has died in Oklahoma at age 74.

The wife of Hall of Fame coach Eddie Sutton died Tuesday at a Tulsa hospital after suffering a stroke in December, according to officials at Ninde Brookside Chapel.

Sutton followed her husband to coaching stops at College of Southern Idaho, Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State. Eddie Sutton finished his Hall of Fame career as interim coach at San Francisco while Patsy stayed home in Oklahoma.

She was also the mother of Oral Roberts head coach Scott Sutton and assistant coach Sean Sutton, who succeeded his father as Oklahoma State's head coach before joining his brother at Oral Roberts. A third son, Steve, is a banker in Tulsa.

"We are saddened today by the passing of Patsy Sutton. She had a positive influence on everyone she met, and was a devoted partner to her husband, Eddie, and a beloved mother to her three sons," Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder said.

"For us at Oklahoma State, she was an ambassador for our college basketball program and our university. She was loved by many and will be missed by many."

A memorial service is scheduled for Friday at First Methodist Church in Tulsa.

"The ORU athletic family has lost a very important person today with the death of Patsy Sutton," Oral Roberts athletic director Mike Carter said. "The Suttons have been a huge part of ORU Athletics for almost 20 years. Patsy was a mentor and friend to so many people and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Sutton family."

Eddie Sutton was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame after going 804-328 and becoming the first coach to lead four different schools to the NCAA tournament. Scott Sutton has won more games than any coach in the history of Oral Roberts in Tulsa, where the family settled in recent years.

"We extend our deepest sympathy to Eddie, Sean, Scott and Steve at Patsy's passing today," Oklahoma State University president Burns Hargis said. "She was a wonderful person who was deeply devoted to her family.

"While she played a quiet role, she nevertheless played a pivotal role in the success of her husband becoming one of the most respected and successful college basketball coaches of all times. And she was a strong and wonderful mother for her three sons. She will be deeply missed by her family and the Oklahoma State family. Our prayers are with the Sutton family at this time."

January 9, 2013

Mr. Sutton,

After reading of the passing of your mother Patsy, I was reminded of a moment I spent speaking with her and Eddie at their home in Stillwater. I was simply delivering a large bundle of my father's fresh, homegrown vegetables to your father from my father. They played basketball together in Bucklin, KS, and kept in touch to a degree over the years. Through their connection I was fortunate to attend a number of OSU games, meet a number of exciting players, and even have a picture of myself, our fathers, and Roy Williams together prior to a game, cementing my love for the Cowboy's.
To the point, when I arrived at your home, Eddie met me at the door and remembered me, receiving me warmly and accepting the vegetables. Your mother walked up, Eddie introduced us, and Patsy invited me in, which I'm sure Eddie was not particularly keen on. Nonetheless, Patsy offered me something to drink while we discussed the connection between Eddie and my father. She was welcoming and so warm. We chatted briefly, which I remember fondly.
Incidentally, I do make a point, though not particularly a fan of ORU, to watch a game or two to see you and Sean coaching together, which is quite cool, to say the least.
Please know our thoughts are with you, Sean, Steve, Eddie and your families. Your mother was a wonderful lady.

God bless,

My prayers for the Sutton family. As an alumnus of the University of Arkansas, much was made of the impact Patsy had when Coach Sutton was there. I have noticed that among so many successful basketball coaches in history (John Wooden,Lute Olson,Coach K, etc.) that coach had a very supportive wife. Patsy is a example of that. God Bless!

This is such sad news. I went to high school with Patsy, we graduated in the Class of '56. Patsy was one of the most beautiful girls in our class, but more than that she was a genuinely nice person who always went out of her way to make those around her feel more comfortable and at ease, just a truly sweet person. I saw her and Eddie at our 2011 HS reunion in Stillwater, and she was as lovely and gracious as ever. Those of us who grew up and went to school with her are truly blessed to have known her. Our hearts go out to Eddie and her wonderful sons, she was far too young-at-heart to leave us so soon. She will be missed on this mortal coil by many, but heaven is a better place today with her there.
