Rex Trailer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2013.
BOSTON (AP) - Rex Trailer, the native Texan beloved by a generation of New England children for the cowboy skills he demonstrated on the Boston-based television show "Boomtown," has died. He was 84.

Trailer died Wednesday at his family's home in Florida, said his friend and manager Michael Bavaro. He had fallen ill with pneumonia in Florida over the holidays, but the exact cause of death was not immediately clear.

"Rex Trailer left this earth peacefully last night surrounded in love and song by his family," the family announced on his website. "While everyone's prayers and support have been of great comfort to Rex, he decided it was time to go home. Rex and family thank all of you and love you."

"Boomtown" ran on Boston television from 1956 until 1974. Trailer hosted the show, singing, playing guitar and showing off the horse-riding, roping and other cowboy skills he had learned as a boy on his grandfather's ranch in Texas.

The show wa s an instant success when it first aired, the live studio audience enraptured by Trailer's Texas twang. It aired live every Saturday and Sunday morning for three hours. More than 250,000 kids appeared on "Boomtown" over the years and more than 4 million watched from home, according to the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Trailer was inducted in 2007.

In addition to the cowboy action, the show offered educational games and films, cartoons and outdoor adventure.

"He was a visionary in a lot of ways," Bavaro said. "He was doing educational children's television before there was educational children's television."

The show was one of the first where mentally and physically disabled children were prominent in the audience, a conscious decision by Trailer.

Some people associated with the show were concerned when a disabled child was on the show. "Some people thought he would cause a ruckus, but Rex said 'No, let him on,'" Bavaro said.

In 1961, he led a wagon train across the state to raise awareness about children with disabilities.

Trailer has been honored for his lifetime commitment to disabled children, especially muscular dystrophy.

He taught on-camera performance and production at Emerson College in Boston since the mid-1970s, and ran his own production company based in Waltham that produced commercials, industrial films and documentaries. Trailer was also an accomplished pilot and recording artist, who even wrote the theme music to "Boomtown."

Trailer got into show business on the advice of the ranch hands on his grandfather's farm in Thurber, Texas. He got a job as a production coordinator with the Dumont Network in New York and worked his way up to producer and director. It was in New York where he first became an on-air talent as host of the "Oky Doky Ranch."

He hosted western-themed TV shows in Philadelphia for five years before landing in Boston in 1955. His original 13-week contr act with WBZ-TV lasted nearly 20 years. When "Boomtown" went off the air, Trailer doffed his cowboy hat and hosted a science-themed children's show for several years called "Earth Lab."

His reach was so wide that in 2011 a state senator introduced legislation to make Trailer the "Official Cowboy of Massachusetts."

His wife of 55 years, who went by Cindy, died about two years ago. He is survived by his daughter, Jillian Trailer-Rollock, and other family members.

His family said a memorial service is being planned.

I remember visiting Rex Trailer's home when he lived on Good Intent Rd., Deptford, NJ. I was a school mate/friend with his niece, Lorene, who had a birthday party at the ranch. I remember we all got "silver bullets"! We watched his show and enjoyed it immensely.

All my family loved Rex. We watched every show. I got to meet Rex at the old Bradlee's Dept Store at White City in Shrewsbury back in the 60's. Now I'm in my 60s but still remember looking forward to watching Rex again. I guess now I'm looking forward to meeting Rex again, in Heaven. He was a kind gentle guy that loved kids, and kids loved him too. Too bad there are not more people like him. Sorry for your loss, it's our loss too. George Corazzini, Minot, ND.

Rex Trailer is,was,as well as always will be the most personable person who's ever walked on this earth.
I'm a die-hard fan of his,As his Daughter Jillian described me, and Rex even used to drop into the aqueduct of my neighborhood via his helicopter to visit Sid Pike the then Manager of WBZ-TV-4 in Boston,MA.One time Rex was even a guest of Sid's Daughter's at her Bas-mitz-vah.
I even covered these bases with Rex at The Joe Val Blue Grass Festival on June 21,1998 and 21 years after I went on The Ca.Trip with him and shortly after this J.Kevin had said to me "Hey Stephen Rex used to drop into our aqueduct ask Mom."I did and she even told me of all the data above and how Rex even has a car that drives on the water.
Truthfully,
Stephen

I got Ste as The Result of my Older Brother J.Kevin being a year older than me and unable to say Stephen at the time and of which is why I couldn't be brought up to prefer Stephen.

Jill and family, you will always be in my prayers! You probably don't remember my family but my grandparents lived next door to you. I remember going there and then visiting with you and your mom & dad and swimming in the pool! We always watched your dad's show as well!! Sincerely,

I had the distinct honor to study under Rex at Emerson College (1975-1979) but to also work with him at his studio. He was one of the sweetest men I knew. Growing up in NJ, I didn't get to see him on the air as a kid, but wish I could have. God bless you Res.

Rex Trailer was the best thing to happen on a Saturday early morning. He showed the old king cartoons and the Sergent Billy along with another character that died. And Rex handled his death with grace knowing that it was the first time most children dealt with it. My twin sister and I got to watch it at my Nana's house. Very happy memories.

Talk about "class", some spend their whole life trying to achieve it; others, like Rex were born with it. Knew Rex well, first at Air General an many hours shooting landings on Big Island Pond. Last time I saw Dallas was just before he went to PanAm; Did see Rex many times and always asked to be remembered. Dallas may not be aware but another of the Air General original crew recently passed...Nelson B. Lee. My condolences to Rex's family and to Dallas. Fond memories

February 24, 2013

My most sincere sympathies to his entire family. You will never know how much he impacted so many young lives. He truly was "our hero". You can't say that for too many people today. God rest Rex...thank you for the wonderful memories.

What a beautiful, compassionate, loving soul this man was! I am 59 and just discovered this Icon, who brought so much loving kindness to this world. I have never seen nor heard of him until now. I learned that he resided in Almonesson-Deptford Township around 1950 till 1965, while doing a childrens TV show in Philadelpia. He had a ranch here in Deptford during this time. I learned that the house I grew up in and still reside, was built on part of Rex's land in 1959! It is a small developement of 90 ranchers call Almolind Homes. Rex I am so gratefull to discover you,and what a beautiful, talented and loving man you were. Respectfully Walter Kingston

When I was 5, Pablo died, and you ever so gently taught all of us children, most for the first time, about sadness and death, and it is OK to cry.
When President Kennedy died in 1963 you taught us to put down our guns, and we were all sad, and it was OK to cry.
I think back to all of those early mornings waiting for the test pattern to go away; you are gone now, and I am sad, and cry.
But the wealth of memories you have left with us all, brings on smiles that grow and grow, as we share our hearts with your legacy of teaching and gentility.

So sad to hear. Rex Trailer and his show brought such joy to this little girl who pretended he was her daddy, visiting through Boomtown every weekend, when in reality she never knew when she would see her daddy. Rex filled a hole in my childhood.

Of my many wonderful childhood memories, none is as prominent as my flying with Rex in his helicopter to an event with Pablo. In his "Whirlybird", we flew up Rte. 93 and I remember so well the people looking up at us as the copter had a big glass "bubble" for a windshield.
Rex was larger than life and his devotion to children, his sense of truth, honesty and integrity all had an effect on us.
Thanks Rex for all you did.

We have, in our mind's eye, a tendency to romanticize the past. Life was a dream and childhood, idyllic. We had safe streets and stickball, bobby socks and records, Lassie and The Lone Ranger, and of course, we had Boomtown!

Our childhoods were surely not all as good as we see them in our memories. Families and children had problems, just as they do today. Back then, it seems though, that people didn't talk about those problems as they do so freely now. There were children living in poverty then, too, and alcoholism and abuse, and there were broken homes, like mine.

Mr. Trailer was a man much-blessed by fortune, but in humility, for every blessing in his life, he gave a hundred-fold back to the world. With his great talents, and handsome face, he might have become a big Hollywood movie star. But, instead, Rex saw the importance of giving to children. He was drawn to entertaining and teaching kids, and in return, we were all drawn to Rex. Something in children senses goodness and trustworthiness in others. No matter the troubles we faced as children, Rex was always there for us.
We knew him well, we knew he loved us, so we loved him.
We always will.
So long, Mr. Trailer.

You were patient, considerate and loving during a very trying time...never without a positive comment and a reassuring smile. Rex was a kind and positive man not only for the "public eye", but also behind the scenes at home. God be with you both and to Jillian, Gerry and John.
