John D'Arcy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2013.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Bishop Emeritus John D'Arcy, who oversaw the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend for 24 years during a time of church closings, a national sex-abuse scandal and some run-ins with University of Notre Dame leaders, has died. He was 80 years old.

Diocese spokesman Sean McBride says D'Arcy died Sunday of cancer at his home in Fort Wayne. D'Arcy, who was treated for prostate cancer in 2011, announced last month he was battling a rare form of cancer that had been diagnosed in his lungs and brain. He said the disease was discovered when he went to a Boston-area hospital after feeling ill while visiting relatives.

Bishop Kevin Rhoades, who succeeded D'Arcy, thanked those who prayed for D'Arcy while he was ill and asked them to pray again for him, his family and his loved ones.

"Bishop D'Arcy faced death as he lived his life: with deep faith and trust in God," Rhoades said. "He offered his prayers and sufferings this past month f or the people he loved and served with joy and faithfulness these past 28 years in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend."

D'Arcy retired in 2010 as bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese that covers 14 counties in northern Indiana with more than 150,000 members.

He received national attention when he was one of the few church officials commended in a scathing 2003 report issued by the Massachusetts attorney general about the widespread sexual abuse of children by priests in the Boston Archdiocese. The report blamed then-Cardinal Bernard Law, his predecessors as archbishop and Law's assistants for sheltering abusive priests and other church workers who molested as many as 1,000 children between 1940 and 2000.

But D'Arcy, a former auxiliary bishop in Boston, was noted for his strong support of screening potential priests, as well as his warnings to his superiors about predatory priests.

Later in 2003, he disclosed that 33 children - most of them teenagers at the time - had been sexually abused over the previous five decades by 16 priests in northern Indiana diocese. D'Arcy said then there was too much secrecy surrounding the issue.

"I think people don't want to know a lot about it, but they want to know the bishop is handling it right. I think that means a lot to them," he said.

D'Arcy also made headlines for opposing some decisions by leaders at the University of Notre Dame, which is in the diocese. He wrote a nine-page "pastoral response" in 2006 criticizing the decision by the Rev. John Jenkins, Notre Dame's president, to allow "The Vagina Monologues" to be performed on campus.

D'Arcy also boycotted Notre Dame's commencement in 2009 because of the speaker, President Barack Obama, whose policies on stem cell research and abortion D'Arcy said ran counter to church teaching. But D'Arcy did attend an open-air Mass and rally on the campus that day, saying he wanted to support the students protesting Obama.

< P>"All of you are heroes, and I'm proud to stand with you," he said.

Jenkins issued a statement Sunday saying the university joins many others in mourning D'Arcy's death.

"His life was one of loving service to God's people as a pastor and, since he became the bishop of this diocese in 1985, he has shown dedicated and affectionate care for the University of Notre Dame. We remember him with gratitude and, though saddened by his passing, we believe he will be an advocate for us in the heavenly kingdom," he said.

D'Arcy was born in Boston in 1932, ordained a priest in 1957 and served as a parish priest in the Boston area for nine years. In 1975, he was ordained an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Boston, and installed as bishop of the Fort Wayne-South Bend diocese on May 1, 1985.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Bishop John D'Arcy was my Father confessor and mentor at St. John Seminary in Brighton (Boston) back in the late 60's. He was a wise and wonderful Priest of God and, more, a man of love who not just preached but lived a life of love and wisdom. After 50 years, I still miss him and his kind words and advice dearly. Father Jack, may you live forever in the arms of Our Lord. Amen.

I was a young Catholic boy in the early sixties going to St Mary's school in Beverly Ma. I remember Fr. Darcy as my favorite priest in the parish. I remember him coming to the schoolyard to play Wiffle ball with us. I recall to this day him pitching to our teacher, Sister Genevieve in her penguin habit, and her running the bases with that cardboard bib flipping up into her face. Father Darcy came across as a regular guy who happened to be a priest. God Bless him.

Bishop John Darcy was a wonderful man he was always so kind to my family and to me. My late husband was born in Quincy, Mass. his Mother's maiden name was Mary Moran and of course was the daughter of Irish immigrants. Bishop Darcy resembled my husband's family very much, so my children and I felt a kinmanship with him and that somehow they were connected.
We shall miss him very much, may God rest his soul!

Bishop D'Arcy was such a blessing to me and my family. He was my husband's immigration sponsor when he came to the United States from Ireland to teach theology. He was my friend as I worked as a theology teacher at Bishop Dwenger. He always stopped to talk with us and our daughters anytime he saw us. After his retirement, he would celebrate mass with our parish sometimes. Each time he would give us hugs and talk with us for a while about our lives. He always remembered our daughters names and asked about them. I recall one time meeting up with Bishop at a diocesan event. We sat down with him and shared lunch. then after lunch ended, we sat for a while longer after others had left while Bishop played with our two young daughters, probably 2 and 4 at the time, while they ran under the table. He was able to just be with us in the moment...loving the gift of life. Bishop has always shown me how to live and for that I will always remember him.

Back in 1957, as a young, newly-ordained priest of the Boston Archdiocese, then-Father D'Arcy served for a time as assistant priest at St Elizabeth of Hungary Chapel & Holy Trinity Schools in Roxbury, MA. During those first couple years, it was my honor and privilege to be acolyte at his Masses.

With the souls of the righteous, give rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your servant, the Bishop John, in a place of light, a place of green pastures, a place of repose, where there is neither sorrow nor sighing, but only life everlasting. Forgive him all his sins of word or deed, for You are all merciful and love mankind, and unto to You are due all glory, honor, and worship, together with your Father and Your all-Holy, Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

May his memory be eternal!

To Sr. Ann, Joan, and all the D'Arcy Family: you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time of the loss of your most loved brother, uncle, and friend. I share in your loss of my special friend and mentor. I cherish the priviledge of having worked with Bishop for eight years and benefitting from his wisdom, example, courage, and love for the people of the diocese. When my mother passed away he invited my sister and I to his home where he said Mass for my mother. I have the rosary he gave me at that time, blessed by Pope John Paul II. He is resting in peace with the God he served so faithfully and selflessly.

February 6, 2013

In late winter of 2011 my husband was receiving radiation treatment at the same time as Father. I would say "Hello" to him as he left each day. One afternoon he came over to me and asked if he knew me. I said that I wasn't Catholic, but that I felt that I knew him because I has seen him on tv so many times when my husband and I had lived in South Bend. He mentioned his love for "his lady". He asked if I was a patient and I responded that my husband was. He said that he would include my husband in his prayers. Father is my example of a Godly person. He offered a prayer for someone who was needing it, even though he was not a member of his branch of Christianity. Thank you again Father, and rest in peace. Elaine Beeching

To Bishop D'Arcy's family,
This man showed me, by example, his faith in God. His hierarchal status never stood in the way of his accessibility. His console and words of hope and encouragement will follow me to my grave. Thank you, Bishop D'Arcy, for being such a good shepard with your flock.

My deepest sympathies to the D'Arcy family. I had the pleasure of meeting Bishop D'Arcy a few years ago when I brought my mother to a mass he was saying on the North Shore in MA. My mother and uncles grew up with John in Brighton so my mother (Anne Pitts) was thrilled to see him again. God Bless his soul and may his family find comfort during these difficult days ahead.

Bishop D'Arcy's many attributes have been a part of my family since the early day's of our Brighton years. His Father's grocery store up from my Grandfather's grocery store-Stewart's Market, across the street from my Father's dental office and the corner across from Henzler's Spa.-- Winter "coasting" on Upcrest Rd. What fond memories ! John (a little my senior)always seemed to be around and his great worth of character has been in my thoughts and heart throughout the years. His Spiritual and kind words in a letter to my Dad when Mother died meant so much and still holds a place in the family archives.May all who have been fortunate to be part of John's life follow in his steps and be grateful and blessed to be a part of the wonderful life he gave to us.
May John's Spirit and the Love of God be with us now and forever.

Bless You and Rest in Peace !

What a loving Bishop. This a loss for America but a gain for the Church for he is praying without ceasing in the Presence of Our God and Savior.
I am thankful for Bishop D'Arcy's life, his love, and his presence at our grandchildren's reception of the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. I was privileged to be able to go to confession to him a year ago. Blessings to all his family and friends.

THE REDMAN- TAPP FAMILY

February 4, 2013

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We lived in the FW-SB diocese for 25 years, he was the bishop for 24 of them. A tremendous leader who would not back down from anyone. He raised fifty million dollars to undergird Catholic schools teachers' pay and initiated an endowment for the diocesan high schools. Think I know where he is now.
