Flynn Robinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 24, 2013.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Flynn Robinson, who was on the 1971-1972 Lakers team that won Los Angeles its first NBA title, has died at age 72.

The Los Angeles Times reports Robinson died Thursday at an LA hospital from cancer.

The reserve guard was dubbed "Mr. Instant Point" by Lakers announcer Chick Hearn. He averaged nearly 10 points in 16 minutes off the bench during the season.

Robinson averaged 14 points per game during his professional career. He was an All-Star with the Milwaukee Bucks during the 1969-1970 season and during his eight years in the NBA also played for the Cincinnati Royals, Chicago Bulls and Baltimore Bullets.

His final season was 1973-1974, playing for the San Diego Conquistadors of the defunct American Basketball Association.

It has been two-plus years since Flynn Robinson passed away. I think of Flynn often; always will. Flynn's U. Wyoming and NBA years are legendary. What may not be well known of this remarkably generous man is his devotion to mentoring others who loved the game of basketball. Throughout his 50s and 60s, playing in men's seniors tournaments all over the U.S., Flynn thrilled teammates and opponents with his dribbling, shooting, assists, and sportsmanship. Whenever Flynn put his arm around another player, as I was privileged to be on the receiving end of numerous times over many years, confidence would soar. At the end of every game--though "the crowd" may have been small, Flynn would stick around, sign autographs, and give tips to kids. Such an ambassador! Such a good man! -"Doc" Brown, Helena, MT

Although it was many years ago, I remember Flynn's playing days and being so quick and quick release. Was much fun to watch him and share the joy of his talents and leadership.

what a shock to hear of the passing of one of the early Los Angeles Laker championship teams. I can remember seeing Flynn play when he played for the University of Wyoming, and was an all-american. I could tell that he was going to be great in the NBA. The Lakers have had so many great players and am so glad that Flynn is in that category..May the Robinson family be blessed with the love of our savior during this sad time...R..I..P...Flynn

Flynn Robinson was my Cousin. I called by His nickname "Tickle". The last time I saw Him He told me to stop calling Him Tickle because He was TOO old for the name. But, that is the Flynn Robinson I know, FAMILY.Family values are rare today. The World knew Him for Basketball but, I knew Him has Family. I know you made peace with God, so I will see you again. I will miss you, love, your Cousin Ms. Brenda R. McGruder
