Houston Firefighters Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 31, 2013.
HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities say four firefighters are dead after trying to battle a fire that engulfed a Houston motel along a busy expressway.

The Houston mayor's office released a statement saying the four firefighters were killed Friday after a blaze broke out at the Southwest Inn. The local medical examiner's office says three victims died at the scene, while the fourth died at a hospital.

Five others were injured and are hospitalized for chest pains or leg injuries.

The blaze broke out just after noon Friday at a restaurant and club at the motel along U.S. 59, one of Houston's most heavily traveled expressways. Flames spread to the motel and were shooting from the roof before firefighters extinguished the blaze about two hours later.

The fire's cause hasn't been released.

Bravest of the Brave by Jill Eisnaugle

The Lord looked down from Heaven and He saw the fiery blaze
His bravest children called to serve within a smoke-filled haze
Their duty made Him very proud, but something was not right
The heat had become much to bear; the winds were far from light
And yet, He watched, a Father touched; such courage on display
As other servants stood close by to bow their heads and pray
The water poured, as firefighters battled every flame
But, on this day, the fire proved too tough for four to tame

The Lord so quickly ushered these brave souls through Heaven's Door
Assuring them a sacred place of safety, evermore
Although we pause to mourn their loss, our lives are richly blessed
Because the fearlessness they showed exemplifies the best
In HFD's most somber hour, we find a sense of peace
Four truly special angels now reach down from clouds of fleece
And hold us in their warm embrace, each moment of our days
Their selfless acts for mankind's good in memories, always

The Lord looked down from Heaven as the fire fully raged
He saw the sense of struggle and the battle that was waged
He watched true heroism, unfolding at every turn
And from this darkest hour, there are lessons we will learn
Four of HFD's finest have answered their last alarm
They now reside in Heaven, free of suffering and harm
Left behind is their legacy; the lives each helped to save
Ever etched in our memories; the bravest of the brave

With thoughts, prayers and sympathies in this difficult time, Jill

The Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage

Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child before it is too late

Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,

To guard my every neighbor and protect his property.

And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life;

Please bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.

With neverending gratitude!! to all the brave men, and women who are Angels on a Red Truck!!
