I saw an interview with Mr. White Hat on Ken Burn's documentary called The West. My heart was touched by this interview. After all of the terrible things that were done by white men to Native Americans, the land stolen, treaties broken, starvation and total disrespect of them, Mr. White Hat said that after his anger passed, he knew that he had to chose to forgive. That takes heroism. The world has lost a great man. I'm am certain that other white men have apologized for the treatment of our Native Americans, but I have to add that it hurts my heart to think about how mistreated they really were and so, I can only speak for myself and say how very sorry I am. Albert White Hat, you were a great man and I will miss you.

I remember Albert touring the Art Department at UW-Eau Claire and simply absorbing the spirit of the place. His ability to be present in the moment of any conversation, event, or presentation blessed us all -- I am thankful for time with him.

"Wolakota to all our relatives, and to us two-legged becoming human beings, let us have a covenant of peace and friendship without greed for power or using the sacred manner of presencing wolakota as religion. Albert's bottom line, we are human and wonderful. Albert blessed my path in November 2007 declaring the wonder of Maka Si Tomni, trusting the surrounding universe in not knowing, a new dimension in living in realization. Heart felt prayers over the past year spirit keeping his presence is the beginning of a future legacy to a wonderful Lakota elder. The Lakota Nation is the best kept secret."

I met Albert White Hat at a retreat in Waco TX that was cut short by the events of 9/11. He was warm and kind to this curious white woman and shared his culture generously, with a deeply centered wisdom and a hilarious sense of humor. I will never hear a better bear joke! My prayer is that his work will be taken up by a heart as deep and capable. My heart goes to all who will miss him in this world.

It was my pleasure to experience a journey across the reservation with Mr. White Hat as our guide, and to meet him again years later while on another tour. May his knowledge and teachings be carried on! What an impressive man he was, I'm so pleased that I met him.

I only met Mr. White Hat once, a few years ago, at the University. This gentle man left a life-long impression on me. I'm sure he is misses by so many who knew him well and by others, like me, who barely knew him. I only wish I could have spent more time learning from him.

We are earth people on a spiritual journey to the stars. Our quest, our earth walk, is to look within, to know who we are, to see that we are connected to all things, and that there is no separation, only in the mind.

To the young Lakota, please memorialize Mr. White Hat by learning your native language. We non-Native Americans don't want this part of your culture to die. I honor this great man.

MY SORROW AT THE PASSING OF MR. WHITE HAT IS INDESCRIBABLE. I AM NOT NATIVE AMERICAN; HOWEVER, I TRAINED ON THE ROSEBUD RESERVATION FOR PART OF MY MEDICAL TRAINING, AND CAME TO LOVE AND RESPECT THEIR CULTURE. I PRAY SOME YOUNGER LAKOTANS COME ALONG TO KEEP HIS LEGACY ALIVE!
