Shawn Burr Obituary
Dave Goetze, a friend of Burr's, says Burr was making progress in a fight against leukemia, but he died from brain trauma after a fall at his Detroit-area home. Goetze has worked for the Shawn Burr Foundation in support of blood cancer research.
Burr was a first-round draft pick by the Red Wings in 1984. He made his NHL debut in 1984-85 and was with the Red Wings until 1995. He also played for the Tampa Bay Lightning and San Jose Sharks.
In 878 NHL games, Burr scored 181 goals with 259 assists and 1,069 penalty minutes.

This saddened me and my 2 oldest daughters when we learned of Mr Burrs passing. Tho our experience was short, he had made an everlasting impression on us as I was renovating a historical house just a few doors down from his. It was take your child to work day so my 2 oldest ( AT THE TIME, 10 AND 12 YR OLD ) were helping me clean up for the day and my girls noticed a man stolling along the river walking his dog and of course the girls ran up admiring the cute little thing. And we all induced ourselves and got to talking when he asked my girls if they played volleyball as if he was a psychic or something. I say that because volleyball was and still is to this day their life. And then he offered my girls to join a travel team, michigan elite. Unfortunately we had to decline because of a prior registration and commitment to a different team. He had given my girls some great pointers and advice that I believe stuck with them till this day. It's now 2024 and my oldest of the 2 coaches the varsity team of a neighboring high-school and believe it or not, the michigan elite travel team. It's unbelievable how far life takes you in such a short period of time. Thank you Shawn Burr for the wisdom and advice you had blessed my girls with. I truly belive it had made a positive impact on my young ladies and their passion for sports which has impacted their lives in so many ways to shape them into the amazing women they are today!!! And one extremely proud and blessed father !!! Thank you, Mike Harvill, Melissa, (Mel) and Alicia, (Red) Harvill.

very sad to hear about the death of Shawn Burr. I am a fan of the red wings and remember what a hard worker he was on the ice. the wings had some great teams back then. my prayers go to his family at this sad time. Shawn earned his wings now. R.I.P.

I had the pleasure of meeting Shawn through employment with Kirk and Huth. Bob Kirk and Rob Huth were his friends, and he came by the office on a regular basis. May I extend my heart felt sympathy to his family. Our world lost a wonderful and fun-loving guy!

Met Shawn when our children attended Montesssori school together. He taught a lot of kids to skate that year. My kids are still skating and enjoying hockey. Shawn was a wonderful guy, a great father and husband, and gave a lot back to the community. We pray God will give your family comfort in your time of need. Shawn thanks for the memories!

Shawn was my first of two friends when I moved to Canada, Ron across the street and Shawn behind my house. One of my earliest memories is leaving my sisters blanket in front of Shawns house and a butterfly made a cocoon on it. My sister called me this am with the news of Shawns passing, I hang up the phone and a beautiful blue and black big butterfly lands on the grass in front of me instantly bringing back this 40 year old memory !.....I grab my phone to take a picture, it flies and lands on the house I bought today, I look down to set my phone on camera, look up again and the butterfly was gone......Shawn said goodbye to me today !! I sat down and cried right there and told him goodbye.....
