Sid Bernstein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 21, 2013.
NEW YORK (AP) — Sid Bernstein, the promoter who brought the Beatles to Carnegie Hall in New York City just as their fame exploded in the U.S., has died. He was 95.

Bernstein's daughter, Casey Deutsch, said her father died in his sleep Wednesday morning of natural causes.

Bernstein made the Beatles the first rock group to play at the classical Carnegie Hall and arranged their historic 1965 show at Shea Stadium, rock's first major stadium concert, which set box office records.

He also booked such top acts as Jimi Hendrix, Judy Garland and the Rolling Stones. He worked with Judy Garland, Duke Ellington and Ray Charles and promoted Dion, Bobby Darin and Chubby Checker.

Bernstein was an early backer of ABBA, setting up the Swedish group's first U.S. appearances.

He also was behind one of the first rock benefit shows, the 1970 "Winter Festival for Peace," and helped revive Tony Bennett's career with a 1962 show at Carnegie Hall.

Bernstein had a studious side that led to his biggest break. He took a course on Western civilization that required students to read a British newspaper once a week. It was 1963, and the Beatles were just catching on in their native country.

"So here I am reading little stories about this group from Liverpool that is causing a lot of 'hysteria.' By the end of the course, I was so Beatle-ized by what I read, even though I did not hear a note, I said, 'gotta get 'em.'" he explained in a 2001 interview with the music publication NY Rock Confidential.

As Bernstein recalled, he couldn't get his agency interested in the group, so he handled the job himself.

The Beatles were still unknown in the U.S. and the price was cheap — $6,500 for two shows.

The timing was perfect. By February 1964, Beatlemania had crossed over to the U.S., and the band was set to play on "The Ed Sullivan Show" just three days before the Carnegie concerts.

In 1965, he landed the group at Shea Stadium. Some 55,000 fans lost their voices and their minds. The New York Times described the scene as meeting the "classic Greek meaning of the word pandemonium — the region of all demons."

Like so many in the music business, Bernstein was the hustling son of Jewish immigrants. He sneaked into the Apollo Theater as a boy and, while studying journalism at Columbia University, ran a ballroom that featured such Latino stars as Morales, Tito Puente and Marcelino Guera.

Over the past 20 years, Bernstein's best client became himself. He wrote two memoirs, "It's Sid Bernstein Calling" and "Not Just the Beatles," and even recorded an album of duets.

At age 90, he started a Twitter account.

"Twitterland!" he called out in one post. "Let's all have a productive week. I have a few very interesting projects in the works and I'll reveal them very soon."

Bernstein and his wife, Geraldine, were married for more than 40 years. They had six children.

Sid was an extremely brilliant and kind man. He was my mentor in many ways. A man who was always willing to share knowledge, and always expressed kind and sincere wishes to those seeking his guidance. His insight into what was prevalent to the music business has made history. His gentle nature and soft-spoken voice has touched countless lives. He will be greatly missed. Blessings to Sid and to his family.

Dear Sid,

I remember your kindness when we chatted about our kids and about entertainment events when we were fellow PS 6 Kid's parents. It seems like weeks - not years - ago. You may have have parked your car for the last time; but I sense your presence is alive and well. Your contributions will live on.

Dear Sid, I did not know you well. I did not know you as a famous music promoter. Well, you were but I did not know you for that accomplishment. I knew you back in the 1960's as just a kind man. I knew you as that guy from New York that married my high school sweetheart's older sister, Gerry. You were always friendly, kind, and generous to me. I remember one time crashing your rental car in Malibu and you were so kind and understanding to a very scared teenager….me. When I babysat your young son Adam while you, Gerry, Joe, and Kathy had a night out on the town in Hollywood, you paid me way too much when I had said my best friend and I would babysit for free. You will be missed by a lot of folks for many reasons. I will always remember you as that really nice guy from New York. I know Kathy and Joe have met you in heaven and are showing you around. Peace.

We were blessed and honored to have met Sid Bernstein in 2006. He & Joseph Gargano helped promote Myles Mancuso (guitarist, songwriter and pianist) when he was only 12 years old. He was an incredible man with a big heart. He loved people and you could tell that he was so kind to not only us but everyone he came in contact with. The world and music industry is a better place because of Sid. He will be sorely missed and deepest sympathies to his beloved wife and family. Love and thanks Sid ~ RIP. Obedient humans will soon receive the full benefit of Jesus' ransom sacrifice.
This will occur under the rule of the Kingdom for which the upright have long prayed, saying:
“Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified. Let your kingdom come.
Let your will take place, as in heaven, also upon earth.” (Matthew 6:9, 10)

Hello Sid's Family,
Though Sid affected my life for many years, I met him just recently several years ago at the Fest for Beatles Fans in NJ/NY. What a kind, gentle man who captivated all of us with his dignity and heart.
The little girl in me thanks Sid with all my heart for the chance
(twice!) to see the Beatles at Shea Stadium.
A claim to fame not only for Sid, but for all of us who experienced the magic together. And magic that will last, I am sure eternally. The memories are blessings!

Sid was both a dear friend. as well a close associate of mine for over 40 years. He once told me, that this was a crazy industry but once you hit it big you could go far! And he sure it big, and I will always remember him as a gentleman in the highest degree.
Sid once introduced me to John Lennon, and that was another thrill in my life.

Sid was a major force in this business, and when he talked people stopped to hear him out. He will be missed greatly, and there will never be another man like him ever again. He was the Walt Disney of our industry, and he could never be replaced..who could top his multi-talents?

Thanks Sid for being a visionary, for having the drive and determination which helped to create an unparalleled phenom called Beatlemania. You saw in them what few did. Sincerest prayers and thoughts to one and all.

During most of 1977 Sid was my partner in the management
of a boogie woogie and blues/ cabaret act called Stormin' Norman and Suzy. Working with Sid was a privilege. I was so proud that he agreed to join me in that business venture. I was honored to work with him.
He was unlike most others I had met in the business. He was sweet, he had vision, intellect, and he was a mensch.
I met his wife Gerry, and she was superb. What a wonderful couple they were. I hadn't seen Sid for over 25 years until five or six years ago when I visited Sid and Gerry. i saw them several times at their apartment when I came to Manhattan. I was so happy to see Sid still greatly engaged in life and the life of show business that he loved so much. He lived a great life--- a legendary one.
Anyone who loves the business of show business, should read his book, Not Just the Beatles!
It's lovely and it's thrilling with a tinge of regret.
Sid, I love you.

It was my great privilege to have met and gotten to know Sid Bernstein over the last few decades. From book signing events to Beatlefests to sing-alongs at Strawberry Fields to concerts by numerous artists, some famous and some not, I would frequently see Sid. Whenever he saw me, his face would light up. At one show, he even asked his assistant to bring him closer to me. Needles to say, I was flattered. He was arguably one of the most important manager/ promoters in the history of popular music, and yet he was also one of the sweetest , kindest people that you would ever meet in your life. I would say that that is an extremely rare combination of traits to be found within the same individual.

We had the honor of seeing Sid at the Fest for Beatles Fans in Chicago. He could not have been more gracious. What came across was his affection for the Beatles and all the other artists he represented. The audience listened with respectful silence as he told stories that were filled with reverence and love. He will be missed but the memories of his visit will live on. Rest In Peace Mr. Bernstein.

I met Sid Bernstein at the NJ Beatles fest 8 or 9 years ago. He couldn't have been more pleasant. It was a thrill to meet the man who brought The Beatles to Shea back in 1965, especially since I was lucky enough to attend that historic concert. Thank you for your vision Mr. Bernstein, and may you rest in peace.

Sid Bernstein, I first met you through the publicist you hired for that historical Beatles tour, Charlie Comer. To witness you two giants talk biz of how you two were able to survive extraordinary circumstances was amazing to hear. According to Charlie, I looked like a deer caught in the headlights! You taught the hustle and bustle, cut-throat world of music how to maintain one's dignity, respect for others, respect for self, never lose focus of family, keep having fun! You shared your heart so easily. What a gift. We are all blessed because of you teaching us to always enjoy the moment. Blessings to your beautiful, loving family.

The last place I saw Sid Bernstein, he was standing alone, unrecognized by the gathering hundreds of people who were drawn to the Central Park Bandshell, the late afternoon of December 9, 1980. A group of inventive fans had removed the panel from a lamp post and plugged in their instruments and amps to sing their homage of sorrow. The music continued as the winter sun was setting, and the Mall filled with hundreds more. Suddenly, the sky opened as if a giant with a down-filled pillow had decided to cover an acre of land with a swirling blizzard of fluffy white, angels' wings feathers on the mourning children below.
The Fagin-gloved players played on and the voices which fill Strawberry Fields in today's generation continued.
The blizzard lasted two or three minutes and was gone.
I turned and headed north to the 72nd Street roadway.

There, standing unrecognized by the gathered mourners, was a solo figure: Sid Bernstein.
I was a "youngster" in the music business, but we recognized each other. I stood with him for a while, both maintaining silence. We nodded, shook hands and I left, glad to know that I had shared a miraculous "witnessing" with someone who understood the miraculous miracle that John had shared with us.

Sid was a mensch of mensches in a business filled with mamzas.

Send our love, you will be missed.

Everyone Loved Sid and so did I. We met early on; his father was our family tailor on Tremont Avenue. When I was a teenager Sid took me to concerts at Lewisohn Statdium and then for an egg cream on 41st and Seventh. He was always kind, sweet and a one of a kind idealist and pop music lover. Somewhere in heaven he will be putting "i'm a Billy Fields Fan" stickers on lampposts. Rest in Peace and condolences to your beautiful family.
