Hussein Samatar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 26, 2013.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Hussein Samatar, a Minneapolis school board member who became the first Somali elected to public office in Minnesota, has died at the age of 45 of complications from leukemia.

Samatar was elected to the Minneapolis Board of Education in 2010. He also founded the African Development Center, a nonprofit group that helps members of the African community start and sustain businesses.

He first entered public office when Mayor R. T. Rybak appointed him to the Minneapolis Library Board of Trustees in 2006. Rybak remembers him as "an extraordinary leader."

Samatar graduated from Somalia's National University in 1991, but four days later a civil war erupted that claimed the lives of his sister and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Burnsville Masjid.

Hussein Samatar, father, husband, leader, friend. What a tremendous loss for all of us. Hussein brought courage and strength, love and commitment to so many. He led the Somali community with his colleagues and allies to a new level of prosperity and influence with charm, persistence, intelligence and spirit. Hussein was often combative but equally tender and warm-hearted in the struggle to build African Development Center and expand economic opportunties for immigrants and the young, new generation of African Americans. He taught us about dedication, faith and freindship, family and community. His achievements will stand as a testament to the love and support of his family and friends. We miss you, Hussein. May you find peace and reward in the hereafter. Farewell, dear friend.
