Frank Martinez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2013.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Frank Martinez, a noted Pacoima muralist whose works depicted Los Angeles and Chicano history, has died. He was 89.

His son, Frank, tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/17lECFe ) that Martinez died on Aug. 17 of complications from diabetes and renal disease.

Martinez, who was born in LA to migrant farmworkers, infused his art with pride in his Mexican-American heritage. He studied at art colleges but never earned a degree.

He created works for public buildings, the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, The Los Angeles Roman Catholic cathedral, the Smithsonian Institution and Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix.

His paintings sold to collectors in Europe and Australia.

Eventually, Parkinson's disease meant Martinez couldn't hold a brush without shaking but he continued to sketch almost until the day he died.

What an example, when he no longer could hold a brush, he transitioned to something he could manage: sketching, and did it with zeal, thus ministering effectively how to deal with loss and not lose his focus and joy of purpose.

"Con eso, oí una voz fuerte desde el trono decir: “¡Mira! La tienda de Dios está con la humanidad, y él residirá con ellos, y ellos serán sus pueblos. Y Dios mismo estará con ellos. Y limpiará toda lágrima de sus ojos, y la muerte no será más, ni existirá ya más lamento ni clamor ni dolor. Las cosas anteriores han pasado”.

Tio,

Thank you for always being such a warm person. For the trip to Utah as a kid and for the artistic advice as an adult. Your paintings intimidated me as a kid but now I can appreciate them.
You will be missed <3

I just learned of Frank's passing from a friend in Los Angeles. Frank Martinez was one of the most important influences in my life. I have so many great memories of many years we spent together at Lavery. Frank was the finest lighting designer to never receive credit for it, and he never asked for it. I have followed his art career since those days and have seen some of the wonderful articles regarding his war service and his contributions to the art community. I only wish I could be there in person. My wife Maureen and I send our deepest condolences to you and your family.
