Billy Thames Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2013.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Former state Sen. Billy Thames died Tuesday of complications from surgery for colon cancer. He was 69.

Thames' wife, Ann, says he died at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Thames was a Democrat from Mize who served in the Senate from January 1980 until January 2008. He was known for working on agriculture and mental health issues.

For most of his time in office, Thames' District 34 included parts of Smith, Jasper and Clarke counties in central Mississippi. During his final years in office, it included Smith and Jasper counties and parts of Jones and Scott counties.

After Thames chose not to seek re-election in 2007, he and Ann moved to the Jackson suburb of Brandon and he was a self-employed lobbyist.

Billy was a great Senator, man and friend to me! If he said he was gonna do something or that he was with you on anything, then you could take his word to the bank! If he was your friend, he was your friend, through the good and bad times! He will be missed by me and so many others! My prayers go out to Ms. Ann and his three girls that he both loved and talked about all of the time. R.I.P. my good friend Billy...

Ms. Ann,

My deepest and heartfelt sympathy goes out to you on the loss of one of Mississippi's great leaders. Senator Thames did a wonderful job of spearheading the effort to develop a surface water impoundment in Smith County and was a leader and outspoken advocate for the mental health issues here in Mississippi. He will be sorely missed.
