Jerry Seeman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 25, 2013.
BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Former NFL supervisor of officials Jerry Seeman, who worked as the chief referee in two Super Bowls, has died after a long bout with cancer at age 77.

Seeman died Sunday at his home in Blaine, Minn., league spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed Monday. The St. Paul Pioneer Press first reported the death of Seeman, who was an NFL game official from 1975 to 1990, including 12 seasons as a lead referee.

Seeman moved to the league office in 1991 and served 10 years as the supervisor of officials until his retirement.

"Jerry modernized and improved NFL officiating during his 10 seasons leading the department," Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement distributed by the league. "He was very proud of being a football official, and he always made the NFL proud through his skill, integrity, and professionalism."

Seeman's son, Jeff, is a line judge who worked the Denver-New England game on Sunday night. He has been a game official in the league for 12 years.

Jerry Seeman officiated in 15 playoff games and two Pro Bowls in addition to the two Super Bowls, the last of which in 1991 was his final game on the field when the New York Giants beat the Buffalo Bills in Tampa, Fla.

Seeman was credited for introducing a program for sending officiating crews to training camps to work practices and scrimmages and meet with players and coaches. That program was designed to improve communication and understanding between the two sides.

He also helped facilitate regular offseason meetings among officials and coaches, enhance the use of video technology and expand the grading system for game officials, according to the NFL.

I must be the last to find out about everything. My condolences to the Seeman family. Cancer is a terrible disease, and look forward to its permanent eradication someday SOON I hope. While I never met Jerry, I always remember his trademark smiley when he turned on his mic on tv to announce penalties during an NFL game. Got to see him in person officiate in Houston in 1990 for Oilers vs Jets. Fun to watch him. Dad nicknamed him "smiley" because of his trademark smile. Can't believe I did not know this until today, Sept. 15th, 2017. I feel bad I didn't know about this when it happened. Must not have been very well publicized. Is there anybody that can tell me where he's buried? In case I am in the vicinity of his burial site, I can visit his grave and pay my respects He was the epitome of the textbook example of what NFL officials should be like, and the definition of integrity on and off the field.

I have many wonderful memories of "Mr. Seeman", our trig/calculus teacher in my senior year at Fridley High. My brother Bob (class of 1968) and I got a kick out of telling friends that "the ref you see on tv was my high school teacher/coach." We would drag out the yearbooks to make them believers. I was so sorry to read about his passing, and want to extend my thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

Sorry for your loss Marilyn (Mike, Jon, Jeff and extended family).
I interviewed Jerry for Q&A when he was director of NFL officials while I attended Winona State University in the early '90s. Class guy all the way! I can still see him in hallways at Fridley High School prior to and post NFL games he officiated. He always had his trademark smile.

"Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?", quoted from It's a Wonderful Life. It is so obvious that Mr. Seeman did just that. I am sure you are proud of what a wonderful man he was and of how many lives he touched. I am so sorry for your loss.

Dear Jeff and Seeman Family,
I am sorry for your loss of a wonderful fellow. Having spent many days officiating with Jerry in the "old days", I always felt that I learned something to take to my next game. He was a gentleman first and last and many of us know that we are better for having known him. My sympathies and kind thoughts for you. Be well.

So sorry Marilyn,
for the loss of your Husband -- and Mike, Jon, and Jeff for the loss of your sport-loving father. It is sad to losse another special one from our closely knit neighborhood in Fridley, The Eckland house was just above the Seeman house that was painted a sparkling while with a white picket fence; its yard was usually filled with boys throwing a ball of some sort on a mostly worn sodded lawn.I think of that lawn now and wonder if it misses a loving father with his three sporty sons playing on that worn grass.

Mike, Jon & Jeff - I'm so sorry to hear the news about your dad. My remembrances of horsing around with you guys and the rest of the neighborhood gang in our backyards (which of course were adjacent to one another) are vibrant and will endure. And whether playing baseball or with rabbits out back or racing through the pathway to Moore Lake or watching the ball drop in Times Square on your basement TV, your dad was attentive, measured and impartial. My brothers Jeff and Kevin and my mom are thinking of you guys and your mom with lots of love. Todd Eckland

I am so saddened by the news of Jerry's passing. My deepest sympathies to you all during this time of loss. As a neighbor,I recall Jerry's choice of Grasshoppers for a party drink. Ever the careful drinker, he said the ice cream ingredient removed any alcohol from the drink. Doesn't that sound just like him? He was a fine person and leaves many of us with a host of memories. Remember this quote from the German philosopher,Goethe, who said those who live in the Lord never see each other for the last time. - JoAnn Rice, Golden Valley, and kids Michael and Kim.

To Marilyn,Mike, Jon, Jeff,
I'm very sorry for your loss. I've got a lot of great memories from the old neighborhood. We had so many great families back then. I can't think of any of the kids we grew up with that haven't been successful. Jerry was someone I truly respected. Principled, strict and driven. My dad ran into Jerry a couple years ago and caught up on our respective families and what we were all up to...they had a great time reminiscing. You all are in my prayers.

Dear Marilyn - I met your darling great-grand twins last week in the Parent/Child Center I staff at the Fridley Community Center. One of our ECSE teachers is best friends with Jan and she has talked about these darling little girls so often, and last week she brought them to our Center. We didn't know at that time that I knew your family. You can only imagine my surprise that we realized I used to babysit for her husband! I remember many nights at your home with the boys! And there are fond memories of picking you up in our car pool for classes at the U of M when you went back to school....we always called you "the lady." It is with great sadness that I send my deepest sympathy to you and your family. Jerry was a much respected teacher and coach at Fridley High School. As a student at Fridley High in the mid 60's, I witnessed a teacher and a coach who could take a mediocre situation, and bring it to a higher level. My condolences to Marilyn and the family.
I knew Jerry as a school administrator in the Fridley School District. I was privileged to serve as a school board member for 9 years during the 1970's. Jerry was always prepared, thoughtful, hard working, friendly and had that smile that so many have commented on.
I also had the opportunity to help arrange for Jerry to receive the Communication and Leadership award given yearly to an outstanding member of the larger community in Minnesota. Jerry Seeman was truly an outstanding communicator and leader in every facet of his life.
There are not enough kudos to describe Jerry Seeman. He truly made the world a better place by his life. A lot has been said about his skills as a teacher and coach but not enough about his skills as Athletic Director and business administrator in the school system.
I pray that many of the other administrators, staff members, board members and students of the Fridley School system are aware of his passing. It was ironic that I only heard of it when watching the Packers/Lions game on TV.
May his memory continue to serve as a role model for many, for many years.

As inventor of the modern football kicking tee, I had a number of opportunities to interact with Mr. Seeman in his role as NFL Supervisor of Officials. In that role, he was responsible to present new equipment to the owners for approval for use in NFL games. He was consistently kind, gracious. knowledgeable and professional. Our interactions resulted in my development of the GROUND ZERO 1 tee which has been used in every NFL game the past 15 seasons. My condolences to the Seeman family.
