Audrey Totter Obituary
Totter's daughter, Mea Lane, tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/JrDjQZ) that her mother died Thursday at a Los Angeles hospital. She was 95 and had recently had a stroke.
Totter was under contract with MGM starting in 1944. After landing a small part in "The Postman Always Rings Twice," Totter went on to a series of roles as tough-talking blondes.
Her breakthrough came with "Lady in the Lake," the 1947 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe detective tale. She also appeared in the thriller "The Unsuspected" and the boxing drama "The Set-Up."
After retiring to raise a family, Totter later resurfaced on television.

I loved and have mostly all of her movies. She was a very talented actress who will truly be missed by us "old-timers" and regret for this generation for not having the years of entertainment by your mother and her peers. My prayers are with you and your family.

Dear Mea,
I wrote to your mother for years. My mother had gone to high school with your mom & we grew up with a picture of your mom on one of my mom's dressers.
I had ambitions in acting and she always wrote advice. My acting has been limited to convincing students they can do math.
As my uncle lives in California, I was able to visit Audrey with my aunt and my daughter in 1986. Your mom had breakfast for us and it was so memorable. We talked of everything and actually had knitting in common.
For years, we exchanged Christmas cards & notes. Her notes always included what Mea was doing. She was very proud of you.
Know that there are good memories of her and prayers for you.

My mother would often mention Audrey and was so proud that she came from Joliet and made it big as an actress. I'm not sure if she knew her personally, but you'd think she did by the kind words spoken whenever she mentioned her name. I always liked Audrey Totter and especially in the "Lady in the Lake" with Robert Montgomery and Lloyd Nolan. One of my all-time favorite movies with a sparkling cast and dialog.
