Andy Granatelli Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2013.
MONTECITO, Calif. (AP) — Andy Granatelli, the former CEO of STP motor oil company who made a mark on motorsports as a car owner, innovator and entrepreneur, has died. He was 90.

Granatelli's son, Vince, said his father died Sunday of congestive heart failure at a Santa Barbara hospital.

Granatelli is a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.

"Everything he did was bigger than life," Vince Granatelli said.

Andy Granatelli's cars nearly won the Indianapolis 500 in 1967 and '68 with turbine engines. He broke through in 1969 with Mario Andretti driving his winning car with a conventional engine. Granatelli kissing Andretti on the cheek in Victory Lane is one of the most famous images in Indy history.

In 1973, Gordon Johncock gave Granatelli another Indy 500 victory.

"The thing that gave him the most gratification in his life was what he did at the Indianapolis 500," Vince Granatelli said.

Andy Granatelli was born in Dallas. He gained fame during World War II as a promoter of racing events, such as the Hurricane Racing Association.

He is survived by wife Dolly and sons Vince and Anthony.

I worked at tune-up masters for 5 yrs, and grew to know ANDY pretty well, anytime I called corporate and spoke to his secretary Karen, she says ANDY always had time to speak to me, that I was one of his favorite MGRS. I managed the FLAGSTAFF ,AZ shop, i HAVE AUTOGRAPHED PICS OF HIM AND I on a bet for $100 I won, ;aughing in pic. I loved him like a father, he always gave me good advice, 3 secrets about being successful in life, POSITVE MENTAL ATTITUDE, EXTRA EFFORT, AND DESIRE, and I've followed this my whole CAR SALESMAN CAREER. THANK YOU ANDY R.I.P.

About 40 years ago I was good friends with Vince and racing Studebaker with help from Andy. At Bonneville late night 1am Andy and Dolly roll into town and find me sleeping in my truck (couldn't afford a room) In the morning they came back and took me to breakfast. They then left town, however he first gave me their room payed up for the week. There's more.
All my best and condolences to Dolly and Vince

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Granatelli when I worked for Tune Up Masters in '82 twice , I learned a lot while at Tune Up Masters , and would like to thank him and his managers for the knowlege I had taken with me when I left , as the years passed by , I felt like I should have paid them instead of them paying me , but even though there were frustrating times , I actually had a lot of fun , and I want to thank you guys , ( you know who you are ) I had forgotten about Andy over the years , until I bought my Hemmings " Muscle Machines " off the news stand , and saw his obituary , what scares me , is the fact that he was as old as I am now when I met him , but at this time my condolences go out to the Granatelli family and I praythat God will bring peace and comfort to them at this time , And I can say that I actually look forward to the time I go to Heaven , I know it is a beautiful place , and it will never be boring with the likes of John Z. DeLorean , Zora Arkus Duntov , Carroll Shelby , Ed " Big Daddy " Roth , Boyd Coddington , Andy Granatelli nd many others , growing up as a kid , I had seen and read about him in the pages of HOT ROD MAGAZINE , and I had those STP stickers on my bicycle and my skateboard , he was definetely one of the more inovative people in the automotive world , and he will be missed , and this is what I love about God , he created individuals , he created people on purpose for HIS purpose , there is NOT one person alike on this earth from one another , and there is no other Andy Granatelli , RIP Andy !

Shocked and saddened to hear about the loss of a great ambassador to auto racing, Andy Granatelli. I went to the Indianapolis 500 museum and saw the famous picture of Andy kissing Mario Andretti on the cheek after he won the 500 in 1969, that will always stand out in my memory. Andy was such a great innovator and his STP oil is widely used. May the family of Andy be blessed by the love our dear savior comfort them at this time of great sadness. Rest in Peace Andy and thank you for the great contributions you gave to auto racing. You will never be forgotten.

Andy Granatelli was one of my first heroes of American auto racing and always will be. I read "They Call Me Mr. 500" when it was released in 1969 and was hooked. His legacy in American auto racing will never cease -- what a great man! I am adding to the gallery some treasured photos of Andy and his cars at the 1969 Indy Car race at Hanford, CA, which Mario won in the same Brawner Hawk he would win the Indy 500 in a little over a month later. Way to go Andy!
