Anne Moody Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2015.
JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) — Anne Moody, whose memoir "Coming of Age in Mississippi" gave a wrenching account of growing up poor in the segregated South and facing violence as a civil rights activist, died Thursday at her home in the small town of Gloster, Mississippi. She was 74.

Moody had dementia the past several years and stopped eating two days before she died in her sleep, her sister, Adline Moody, told The Associated Press on Saturday.

On May 28, 1963, Anne Moody was among the students from historically black Tougaloo College who staged a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. A white mob attacked the integrated group of peaceful students, dousing them with ketchup, mustard and sugar and beating one of the men.

A photograph from the sit-in shows Moody sitting stoically at the lunch counter with food on her head. Moody's eyes are downcast as a man pours more food on one of her fellow students, Joan Trumpauer.

Moody wrote in her 1968 memoir that "all hell broke loose" after she and two other black students, Memphis Norman and Pearlena Lewis, prayed at the lunch counter.

"A man rushed forward, threw Memphis from his seat, and slapped my face," Moody wrote. "Then another man who worked in the store threw me against an adjoining counter."

The Jackson sit-in occurred more than three years after a more famous one in Greensboro, North Carolina. The one in Jackson happened just after the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a decision that legalized sit-ins. But Jackson police provided little protection to the protesters as about 300 whites screamed at and jostled them.

The Rev. Ed King, a white Methodist minister who was the Tougaloo chaplain in 1963, went to Woolworth's as an observer. During a 2009 AP interview, King recalled he reported to Medgar Evers, the Mississippi leader of the NAACP civil rights group, what was happening.

"I had to call him and tell him that of the first sit-inners, a mob has formed, Memphis Norman was unconscious on the floor, he had been kicked ... had blood in his nose, I think even ears. And he did have a concussion from it," King said. "And the first two women had been dragged by the hair."

The sit-in lasted several hours before the store closed. The mob was dispersed and the Tougaloo contingent returned to the campus in north Jackson. The protest was part of a months-long boycott that the NAACP led against white-owned businesses in downtown Jackson. The protesters' demands included the hiring of black police officers and bank clerks, the elimination of segregated water fountains and lunch counters; and the hiring of black clerks at downtown stores.

Two weeks after the sit-in, Evers was assassinated outside his family's Jackson home.

Anne Moody left Mississippi, and the civil rights movement, after she went to New York in the 1960s to give a speech about the movement, her sister said. Adline Moody said her sister was burned out by the work. Both sisters lived outside Mississippi for decades and moved back to the state in the mid-1990s, Adline Moody said.

Even after Anne Moody returned, she never felt at ease in Mississippi, her sister said.

Moody did not attend a 2013 ceremony where state officials unveiled a historical marker commemorating the 50th anniversary of the sit-in.

Adline Moody said Saturday that she admired the courage of her sister, who was two years her senior.

"We came from a very poor family, and when she joined the movement, she did it because it was something that needed to be done," Adline Moody said. "I'm very proud of her for what she did. She made it better for me."

The book by Anne Moody completely transformed my life. I read it in the mid 1970's, when I was a teenager. It forever changed my life, my awareness, and helped me understand racism - longstanding, institutional racism. She also taught me the value of a single person's perspective, the power of an articulate voice. For decades, I have imagined that Anne Moody's story, and the effect it had on a young white girl, would make a powerful story.

Ms. Moody's story is every drop as poignant and powerful as Malcolm's - it means that much to me.

If the measure of a life is by how you inspire and move others, then hers is overflowing. I don't know what became of her post COAIM, but I hope she felt the deepest of satisfaction that only comes when you help others.

What a life!

First may God continue to bless the family of Ms. Anne Moody and I want you all to know that I truly do appreciate the courage this Angel had to face such abuse for all of US.
I am a native of Mississippi and had just finished High School in 1963. However, we were so sheltered that I did not know all of these things were happening until I left Mississippi in September, 1963. I do have Anne's book and read it often just to keep reminded of the history and pray that it does not repeat in this way.

Sincerely,
Dorothy

My heartfelt sympathy to the family. Be assured that our Heavenly Father sees all the injustice and acts of oppression that have resulted in many cruel abuses. He hates injustice, and he cares deeply for those who are victims of it. 1 Peter 5:6, 7 encourages us to "throw all your anxiety on God, because he cares for you."

I and my good spouse, Eldri, arrived at Tougaloo Southern Christian College in late summer, 1961. I was a professor. Anne came soon thereafter as a student. And we were in contact with her from about that point until late summer , 1994.
She was a fine student of mine in a number of courses, and became a close friend of Eldri and myself. Passionately committed to social justice, Anne was a strong supporter of our Jackson civil rights movement which began very actively in latter 1962 as the economic boycott of the downtown Jackson area and which feathered out into our massive Jackson Movement in the spring of 1963. Her role in our historic Woolworth Sit-In at Jackson Mississippi on May 28, 1963, is very well known. After the active demonstration phase of the Jackson Movement, she lent her valuable efforts as a CORE representative in other most challenging Magnolia situations.
Her fine writing abilities are very well exemplified in her classic work, Coming of Age in Mississippi, and in a number of other pieces.
In addition to being a very good friend, she was also, as a great many of my students and former students often are, an advisee of mine, and I her advocate, during many points in her life.
For about three months, in the spring of 1994, she and her son, Sascha, lived in a motel quite near our home at Grand Forks, North Dakota. We assisted her in a number of ways, as we had on earlier occasions, and continued that for a time into the summer after she and Sascha moved on back East and contact with other writers. Then, we lost touch with her.
Her book, Coming of Age in Mississippi, guarantees her immortality. But more than that, we shall always remember a brave and plucky and committed human being who, despite the many and various vicissitudes, continued toward the Sun.

My sincerest condolences to the family of the late great Anne Moody. I have often tried to find current information about her. I am forever grateful for her sacrifices in the name of justice and equality. As a Black woman, I am a direct beneficiary, as are my "children" of the gains which were literally won on the backs of such soldiers as Ms.Moody. I first read Ms.Moody's autobiography, Coming of Age In Mississippi, when I was a teenager. I have since read it several times. The book not only recounts in critical detail her engagement in the Mississippi civil rights struggle, but her narrative also preserves, for all generations, an illustration of the culture and traditions of the segregated southern Black communities in the 1940s and 1950s and 60s. Black enclaves are so often depicted as diminished communities, bereft of positive attributes. Moody colorfully, with incredible recall, not only relates the struggles, but also the positive attributes of these communities that would anchor her spirit to persevere and pull down the strongholds of Jim Crow and racism, and poverty and the associated emotional indignities. These same Black communities which nurtured Fannie Lou Hammer, Medgar Evers, Martin Luther King, Ambassador Andrew Young, Rosa Parks, Julian Bond, Angela Davis, Rep. John Lewis, Oprah Winfrey and so many other soldiers.I salute you Anne Moody! Take your soul's rest. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
