Kayla Mueller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 10, 2015.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Kayla Jean Mueller, a 26-year-old American woman held by Islamic State militants, has been confirmed dead, her parents and the Obama administration said Tuesday.

The White House said that Mueller's family received a private message from her captors over the weekend and the information contained in that communication was authenticated by the U.S. intelligence community. It was not immediately clear how and when Mueller died.

"We are heartbroken to share that we've received confirmation that Kayla Jean Mueller, has lost her life," Carl and Marsha Mueller said in a statement. "Kayla was a compassionate and devoted humanitarian. She dedicated the whole of her young life to helping those in need of freedom, justice, and peace."

President Barack Obama said that Mueller, who was an aid worker who assisted humanitarian organizations working with Syrian refugees, "epitomized all that is good in our world."

"No matter how long it takes, the United States will find and bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for Kayla's captivity and death," the president said.

Mueller, of Prescott, Arizona, is the fourth American to die while being held by Islamic State militants. Three other Americans — journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and aid worker Peter Kassig — were beheaded by the group.

Journalist Austin Tice, of Houston, Texas, disappeared in August 2012 while covering Syria's civil war. It's not clear what entity is holding him, but it is not believed to be the Islamic State group or the Syrian government, his family has said.

Mueller was taken into captivity in August 2013 while leaving a hospital in Syria. Her identity was long kept secret out of fears for her safety.

On Friday, the Islamic State had claimed that Mueller died in a Jordanian airstrike. Jordan, which has launched a barrage of strikes in recent days in retaliation for the gruesome killing of one of its pilots at the hands of the militants, disputed that report and the White House said at the time that it had seen no evidence to corroborate the Islamic State claims.

Mueller had been working in Turkey assisting Syrian refugees, according to a 2013 article in The Daily Courier, her hometown newspaper. She told the paper that she was drawn to help with the situation in Syria.

"For as long as I live, I will not let this suffering be normal," she said. "It's important to stop and realize what we have, why we have it and how privileged we are. And from that place, start caring and get a lot done."

According to the newspaper, Mueller had been working with the humanitarian aid agency Support to Life, as well as a local organization that helped female Syrian refugees develop skills.

A 2007 article about Mueller from the same newspaper said she was a student at Northern Arizona University and was active in the Save Darfur Coalition. A statement from the office of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Mueller graduated in 2009 and had worked to help people in need in India, Israel, the Palestinian territories and in Arizona.

Mueller's family said, "We are so proud of the person Kayla was and the work that she did while she was here with us. She lived with purpose, and we will work every day to honor her legacy."

God bless your wonderful daughter and keep her safe in His arms, in peace until the joyful day when you will be reunited for all time. And God bless your entire family with the strength and resolve to continue building Kayla's legacy. I read the article in the Daily Courier today about Martha and Carl's donation to Doctor's Without Borders. What an example of humility and forgiveness. Because of our Savior's atonement, you will see your daughter again after this life, fully restored in perfect form. Until then, I sincerely wish you comfort and peace.

I was so touched by your daughter ''s courage and faith. I know she is with God. As a Christian I have to admit i' m having a hard time understanding why she had to die the way she did. I'm trusting in God to comfort your family and shower you with his love. God Bless your sweet Kayla. I didn't know her but the picture of her on TV just warms your heart with her beautiful smile.

To Kayla and her Family, I too watched the recent 20/20 episode about the capture and senseless murder or your beautiful Daughter. I can only say that my heart is broken with a sadness that I will carry forever, But I will also carry in my heart a deep respect for her bravery and compassion that few of us in this world can only hope to possess. I have children and grandchildren and can only hope and pray they can achieve a small measure of what Kayla stood for. I recently lost my Mom, Claire D. Contardo(Poisson). Her obituary is also on Legacy.com should you wish to read what a selfless and good woman she was to those who needed a hand when they were lost or in need, And the best Mom a Daughter could have hoped for. I know the loss of a child can not ever compare to any other loss in this world. I believe my Mom (Claire would have reached out to Kayla alongside God when her suffering ended and she arrived in his Kingdom. Don't worry anymore because God and my Mom will hold her in their arms and Love her. And My Love and Support is with you always as well. Kayla is my Angel Hero now and forever. Kayla is a true role model we can always see shine on us like a bright Star, And should we choose to look up it will bathe on us with a Brillance that covers the entire Earth With all my sincere Sympathy! Lisa M. Bissonnette from Bolton Massachusetts.

I am so so sorry for your loss. I was deeply struck from the very first time I read about your daughter Kayla and her life's journey.

Your statement describing your daughter's life and her passion toward helping those in need hit a core with me. I am a journalist who works in the Middle East.

My heart goes out to you and the rest of your family. Please know that her compassion and humanitarianism were not in vein. While I did not know her, I have the deepest respect for her. She was an inspiration to many.

You must have been so proud of Kayla. You raised a beautiful loving human being. She loved what she did and I have no doubt she made a lasting impact on those she touched.

God bless you both. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

It is with deepest sympathies we send this message. While at times feelings of grief and despair may be overwhelming, always remember that God is "with the one crushed and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly ones and to revive the heart of the ones being crushed. (Isa. 57:15) just as Ms Mueller did for so many. May these thoughts bring you peace and comfort.

Hello Marsha and Carl, I'm sitting outside in the sunset in Harare, Zimbabwe, holding you tight. The splendor lights up grand trees, one called 'candle' with bright yellow flowers arrayed tall and long. The birds are singing.

Such beauty and peace always remind me of Kayla. Your generosity and open hearts over the last months embraced me, as we all tried to embrace Kayla. The pain of failure is unspeakable even to me and therefore, I can only imagine yours.

We will embrace the very essence of Kayla as we work to engage our hands and hearts. I will stay the course, along side of Kayla and with you. For peace with justice, Carol

Dear Mueller Family,
I want you to know that this comes straight from my heart. I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't know Kayla or of her until her story came into my home. I want you to know she has touched my heart and I think of her daily. I read her letter she wrote to you from her prison. And her words resonate through me. She was tenderly cradled in free fall and I try to imagine what that was like for her. I think of her light that was so bright and bold. And the inspiration she has become to me daily. Kayla acted selflessly. She was blessed with amazing courage to go where her heart lead her. She made the most of her circumstances and found a way to be Kayla in them. Which is just how the scriptures say we should live. it's my belief that Kayla wasn't alone in her prison bur that the great comforter, the holy spirit was with her. She was in touch with our creator and at peace. Yet the pain of being separated from her family caused her the greatest pain. I will carry Kayla light with me, finding the good in everything even if I have to look for it. So I thank you for kayla. I hope I can make a difference in others lives because of her. I look forward to meeting kayla in heaven. She will be one of the first I will look for when I arrive. May God Bless you and comfort you like only he can.

since I first heard of Kayla Mueller and her family's quiet struggle for over 2 years; Kayla letter which I read reminds me of the letters when Paul was in captivity in The New Testament - I felt Kayla's was a witness letter for current times. SHE Did and she is cheering us on!

Tomorrow night there will be a vigil at the labyrinth outside of the campus ministry at NAU. That is where I crossed paths with Kayla a few times. I would be invited to lead a program, workshop, build a labyrinth, or be part of a roundtable panel at the campus ministry to the most amazing group of students led by Kathleen Day. I remember Kayla specifically because she was so active, a brave leader and kind soul to everyone. I specifically remember that on breaks or around the simple dinners we would share, she would always be knee to knee with a friend being completely present, one to one with the other. I would pause to take note of that most gracious gift she gave to others. You could feel her attention. You knew Kayla was in the room even before you saw her.
