Suzanne Raitt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 17, 2015.
On Tuesday, May 12, beloved media executive Suzanne Raitt died after a fierce six-month battle with cancer.

Renowned for her role in changing the way Canadians view newspapers, Suzanne pioneered research techniques that helped promote the industry and secure prime advertiser support. Her annual presentations on the state of the industry grew into a must-attend event of the year for media members, and her efforts turned her into the global face of Canadian newspapers.

Suzanne held three degrees from Western University culminating in an MBA from the Ivey School of Business, and she served as the Senior VP and Chief Marketing Officer for the Canadian Newspaper Association. She brought considerable marketing and advertising experience to the role through her previous work at A.C. Nielsen Marketing Research, Robin Hood Multifoods, Hershey Canada, Anderson Advertising, Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising, and MacLaren McCann.

Suzanne leaves behind her beloved husband Michael, her cherished sons Matthew and Christopher and her father Michael Warren, as well as a host of family, friends and colleagues. Everyone will deeply miss her warmth, grace under pressure, and ability to always hit her deadlines and still make it home on time for dinner with her kids.

A full obituary for Suzanne is available on both the National Post and the Toronto Star.

Mike, I just read about Suzanne's passing. I am in tears writing this. Suzanne was one of my favourite friends in university, and I enjoyed living with her when we started work in Toronto after graduation. Suzanne was always so friendly, energetic, kind, smart, devoted, and fun. I remember when she fell in love with you. We talked about how to know if someone was the right person to marry, and she said she knew because she didn't need to ask the question. Work, children, responsibility, all meant we haven't see each other for years, but that doesn't change my reaction to reading this news, Suzanne was someone the world benefited from having. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Mathew and Christopher.
Sincerely, Christine and David Cook

Just heard. Our sympathies to the Raitt family and Mike Warren. I had not seen my cousin since her Grandmother's funeral in 1994 but enjoyed keeping in contact on Facebook and this was how I knew of her death- a benefit of social media. I will miss knowing she was out there and her lively humerous comments.

My sincerest sympathies for your loss. I sat on the Advertising Standards National Consumer Response Panel with Suzanne and thoroughly enjoyed all of our interactions. She was a valued guest speaker who frequently presented the merits of newspapers to our first year media students at Sheridan College. Suzanne will be sadly missed. Please find comfort in your loving memories with family and friends during this extraordinarily difficult time!

Words can't express the feelings of sadness that your family must be going through. I have never met someone who was so full of life. She was so accomplished, more than some people can only dream about. She balanced it all and always talked about the love she had for Matt and Christopher. She talked about Mike and the love she had for her dad. Such a strong woman with such a kind heart. I saw our boys grow up together and her love of her family proved she could do it all. Successful career, loving marriage and amazing boys who will grow up knowing how many people loved and cared for her. She will never be forgotten. She will always be with them watching down on them. Cherish all the memories that will remain in your hearts forever. My thought and prayers are with you all during the time.

What a loss. Suzanne presented to our team in Vancouver many times and I always admired her. Suzanne was very intelligent and always was a pleasure to listen to. She made the presentations fun and always injected her sense of humour. We will miss her in Vancouver.

I knew Suzanne when she worked at the Toronto Star. She was such a lovely person. I met Suzanne one day in the Bloor West Village and learned she was my neighbour. She was so happy with her beautiful home. I met her sons - she was so proud of them. My thoughts and prayers are with Suzanne, her family and her friends.

I met Suzanne when she and her family first came to Canada. We were friend throughout our school years and Suzanne would stay at my house when her parents travelled. Suzanne attended my wedding and thats how I picture her now, her arms around friends, laughing and singing (always off-key) and dancing. The last time I saw Suzanne we each held our first born sons and visited once again in the home of my parents. We lost touch when I moved across the country and it's only been in recent years that Facebook connected us once again and I had a peek into her life.

To Suzannes husband, sons and her father, I am so sad for your loss. There are no words, only memories to share and remember. My thoughts are with all of you.

I worked with Suzanne for several years both as a newspaper publisher and as a director of the Canadian Newspaper Association. She always amazed me with her consistently balanced, informed and positive approach to even the thorniest issues. She was a wonderful colleague with a most impressive mind and will be deeply missed. I knew and worked with Suzanne during my time at the Canadian Newspapers Association. She was always so professional-minded and was so appreciative of her coworkers. She had success because she worked at it, and never took anything or anyone for granted.

My condolences to her husband, her family and friends and to her colleagues. She will be missed.

Sincerely,
Cynthia Long
