Mary Ellen Mark Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 26, 2015.
NEW YORK (AP) - Documentary photographer Mary Ellen Mark, called "a snake charmer of the soul" for her gift of capturing searing images of human vulnerability, has died at age 75.

She died Monday at a New York hospital after a long battle with a blood illness caused by bone marrow failure, her close friend Kelly Cutrone said.

Mark's subjects ranged from runaway children and heroin addicts to celebrities and world leaders. She also pointed her lens at members of the Ku Klux Klan, a women's security ward in a mental institution and various celebrities.

Over the decades, "what resulted was, in fact, a lamentation: one of the most delicately shaded studies of vulnerability ever set on film," wrote the late Time magazine art critic Robert Hughes.

A collection of Mark photographs in a book titled "Streetwise" documents the life of Tiny Blackwell, a Seattle prostitute and drug addict Mark met in the 1980s when Tiny was 13. A new book on Blackwell photographed over decades is yet to be published, titled "Tiny: Streetwise Revisited."

The photographer chose Seattle "because it is known as 'America's most livable city,'" she wrote in the preface to her book on the subject. "By choosing America's ideal city we were making the point: 'If street kids exist in a city like Seattle then they can be found everywhere in America, and we are therefore facing a major social problem of runaways in this country.'"

Mark's work appeared in prominent publications including Life, the New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. She also published 18 books.

Her latest project, for CNN, was New Orleans on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Mark was raised in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia. In 1962, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor of fine arts in art history and painting, followed by a master's in photojournalism.

Her work drew attention in the 1960s, when she photographed heroin addicts in London, steeping herself in the humanity of overlooked subjects.

"She was a snake charmer of the soul," said Cutrone, an author and publicist who considered Mark "like my divine mother and mentor." ''She had the ability and intuition to see inside people, to evoke their soul."

Mark, in her SoHo neighborhood, knew people in the street and in shops, Cutrone said.

"She talked to everybody," she said. "She was really connected."

Mark, a photographer's photographer, never really switched to digital cameras.

"I'm staying with film, and with silver prints, and no Photoshop," she told The Philadelphia Inquirer in 2008. "That's the way I learned photography: You make your picture in the camera. Now, so much is made in the computer. ... I'm not anti-digital, I just think, for me, film works better."

Mark is survived by her husband, filmmaker Martin Bell, who directed the documentary "Streetwise" based on her images.

A New York memorial is planned for Sept. 10.

Mary Ellen was an extraordinary individual, great photographer, and humanitarian among others.
She was planning to create a follow-up to the
documentary Streetwise, which was planned for a release late 2015.Mary Ellen had
often kept in contact with Erin Charles since the film came out in 1985.....an example of how she cared so deeply about her subjects that she had met along the path of her incredible career as an award-winning photojournalist.
Mary Ellen Mark had a remarkable journey through LIFE,inspiring us
and touching our hearts as only she could.People were her mission and her concern, and she had a perfect understanding of
every individual that she
encountered.
Her memory will live on in each and every photo that she captured, and in every great story that she shared with us.....
she leaves an unforgettable MARK on the world.....

So sad to learn of your passing Mary Ellen. I met you very late in your life, a week before your passing at the Palm Springs Photo Festival, Palm Springs. I learned that your next assignment was New Orleans. In your honour, I traveled to New Orleans, and I am enclosing a sign that is being held by a barmaid and shot seller at a Bourbon Street bar. I have a set of New Orleans people available if requested, shots taken because you could not. Rest in Peace.

We express our condolences to the Mark family, many friends and colleagues. May you find comfort in your many fond memories together, God's promise to undo all tragedy and the words of the greatest man who ever lived: "Two sparrows sell for a coin of small value, do they not? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's knowledge. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So have no fear; you are worth more than many sparrows." (Matt 10:29-31)

My sincere condolences to Martin, Mary Ellen's family, friends, students and admirers around the world. Here is something that I wrote the day I learned our dear Mary Ellen Mark passed: "Today I learned that my hero, Mary Ellen Mark passed away on Memorial Day. My heart is heavy with grief of the physical loss of this legend but so filled with gratitude for having the opportunity to study with her just last month at the Palm Springs Photo Festival. In March, when I learned she was leading one of the workshops, I could not deny the very loud voice inside that said, "GO!!!" While I was unaware of how sick she was until the festival itself, I knew I was being given a once in a lifetime opportunity to study with her. I have followed and admired her work since long before I became a photographer myself and I consider Mary Ellen Mark my greatest influence. Her feedback during the Palm Springs Photo Festival completely shifted my viewpoint and orientation as to my own work in terms of composition and portraiture. Likewise, many of the things I heard her say were a validation of what I already sensed or knew about how difficult it is for photographers in our genre to be seen and respected for creating real images of real people. Mary Ellen was direct and she was kind. Her suggestions to each one of us, individually and collectively, were deceptively simple yet contained the vessel of her many years of knowledge and experience. Of course, during the workshop, we all learned just how sick she was, but boy-oh-boy, she was fierce and determined. On the last day, I saw her carry her lunch to the trash. I tried to take it from Mary Ellen to help her. She moved her arms with the lunch box away from me. I said to her, "Man, you are tough!!!" I will always remember the sly and slight smile that came across her face when she heard me. And, I can still feel the gentle kiss she placed on my right cheek during our last good-bye at the festival."

A true fighter for life and a true fighter on the scene - that's what Merry showed to be. She was an inspiration for women today in never giving up hope. Her work was very notable and spoke for itself. Although words would never be enough to express our feelings, and since Every family is different in dealing with a loss of their loved ones, I hope that our dear Loving God grant you the inner peace, the strength, and the comfort that can help you in your journey of moving forward.
