Dear Lee, I just realized that John passed; I didn't know he was ill. He touched many of us at The Los Angeles Times. I only knew him for a short while but I'll never forget him. I hope he died peacefully and I send my love to your family.

I had the opportunity to work for and with John Carroll. There was never a person before or after him that I valued their opinion and insight more. I will give you one example of the man's character. I was covering the NAIA basketball championships in Kansas City. I checked out of my hotel because there was a great likelihood that the team that I was covering was going to lose. So, I was gong to catch the first plane back to Kentucky so that I could then get to Spring Training for the Reds. Unfortunately, for me, the team pulled one of the biggest upsets in tournament history and won. When I went to check back into the hotel, the staff informed me that my credit card had been hacked and I had no resources to pay for the room. At nearly midnight, the fine folks that worked in Mr. Carroll's office got in touch with him. And, he sent his personal credit card info to the hotel so that I could re-check back in and then he wired me money. Upon my return, I went to see John and repay him for his kindness and he simply smiled and said: "I will never let one of my reporters down." He never did. He and the late Creed Black were two people that stood very tall and very firm in building the Herald-Leader into a newspaper that all could be proud to call their own. They were pillars. And, when you worked for those two gentlemen, you worked for the right side. God bless you John, in your next journey. May the winds carry you as far as you carried us. All the best, my good and faithful friend. You will be missed.

John was not only an Editor of Integrity. He was a man of integrity in every area of his life.If you were fortunate to know him as a professional colleague or friend, as I was,his honesty, kindness, fairness and dazzling intelligence were always obvious.I hope that his modesty did not keep him from realizing how many people he influenced in the best of ways. The lessons I learned from him as a journalist and friend will stay with me forever
