Jesus Moroles Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2015.
JARRELL, Texas (AP) - Texas sculptor and National Medal of the Arts recipient Jesus Moroles (HAY'-soos muh-ROH'-lays) has died in a traffic accident.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says Moroles was killed Monday night in a wreck in Jarrell (JEHR'-uhl), 30 miles north of Austin.

DPS said Wednesday that Moroles was northbound on Interstate 35 when the van he was driving rear-ended a tractor-trailer rig. Moroles, who lived and worked in Rockport, died at the scene. The trucker wasn't hurt.

President George W. Bush in 2008 awarded Moroles, who specialized in granite, the National Medal of Arts in a White House ceremony.

His 1987 artwork, "Lapstrake," is in New York City near the Museum of Modern Art.

Moroles also did the Houston Police Officers' Memorial, plus had exhibits at the Dallas Museum of Art.

Mi mas sentido pésame a la familia Moroles, por la perdida de su hijo, que la aceptación este en sus corazones, y simplemente que lo vean como una despedida eventual.

My deepest condolences to the Moroles Family. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I grew up with his sister Christina, and I remember how proud she was of Jesus. We grew up in the same neighborhood of Dallas, and we went to the same elementary school.

It is a colossal loss of a colossal man....I was so shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the loss of my dear friend. I am having difficulty finding words
for there are none that will comfort you who are his family and friends. Impossible to believe that he has
left this earth, especially because his presence was so
strong that I still feel he is here. And he is. His work will always enrich our lives as will his love.
I wish I could take away the pain for all who are grappling with his absence, but of course , I can not.
My heart especially goes out to his family.
I remind myself that I am fortunate to have been counted among his friends and to have shared the time I had with him.
I pray for healing for all those who had the honor of knowing and loving him.
With Much Affection,
Alma Quillian

To all the Moroles Family, over the years I was privileged to know this great artist, who always spoke in a calm & quiet measured way. He could make a piece of granite play sounds as well as a perfectly tuned musical instrument. He will be sorely missed, but I know he is creating beautiful art in heaven. God Bless and my deepest condolences.

When he was at El Centro, Jesse used to come to our house to drink coffee and play art with my mother, and his teacher, Dana Smith. Mom really liked him and he was always nice to the kid (me) running around. Pretty sure we have one or two of his Family Ties paintings.
My family's best to you at this time.

We have a sculpture in our condo by Jesus Moroles. It makes me so happy to look at and touch the piece. He was a talented artist and good man. Perhaps he is sculpting clouds for the saints. Thank you Jesus for adding beauty to our lives. I wish I had pulled the trigger on that last commission. You will be missed, but live on in your work.

Dearest Moroles Family,

Jesus touched our families lives in a profound way. When I think of him I will always hear that kind and reassuring voice and funny laugh. He truly lighted up a room with his presence. He was gentle and at the same time powerful. I will miss Jesus so very much.

He has accomplished such great things in his life and brought tremendous beauty to the world with his magnificent sculptures. I will be forever grateful for the privilege I had to represent his works of art. He was a true genius. The only peace that I can find in this tragedy is knowing that a great pharaoh has arrived in heaven. I feel certain that he is about his Father's business gracing the heavens with masterpieces that he will create for all eternity.

Our family and I will forever miss our dear friend and send our deepest sympathy to the entire family during this difficult time.

Aloha, my friend, Jesus. Until we meet again.

With love,
Jerre Lynn

This is such a tragedy...the world lost its greatest living granite sculptor and I lost the best golfing buddy a guy could ask for. I just wish I could've been as good of friend to Jesus as he was to me....because he was the ultimate friend! I love you buddy! Jay Vanier

It is with great sadness that we learn of the death of renown South Texas sculptor, Jesús Moroles. He was well known and loved in Houston and around the world for his art, including the Houston Police Officers Memorial along Buffalo Bayou near downtown Houston.
A large heart-shaped sculpture he created in his chosen material granite is one of the prizes hanging in our "Celebration of Hearts" art collection within our own Texas Heart Institute Wallace D. Wilson Museum.

Our hearts go out to his family, friends and many fans for this stunning loss of a generous and and vital contributor to our culture.
