Ken Stabler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 9, 2015.
A Snake wouldn't seem to offer much help on a football field.

Unless that snake was named Stabler.

Ken Stabler, who led the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl victory and was the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1974, has died as a result of complications from colon cancer. He was 69.

His family announced his death on Stabler's Facebook page Thursday. The statement said Stabler "passed peacefully" on Wednesday while surrounded by family, including his three daughters and longtime partner, who wasn't named. Raiders owner Mark Davis said the team, which was informed by the family, was "deeply saddened by the passing of the great Ken Stabler."

"He was a cherished member of the Raider family and personified what it means to be a Raider," Davis said in a statement. "He wore the silver and black with pride and poise and will continue to live in the hearts of Raider fans everywhere. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to Kenny's family."

The family's statement said he was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in February.

Stabler's coach with the Raiders, John Madden, said his former quarterback was cool under pressure.

"I've often said, if I had one drive to win a game to this day, and I had a quarterback to pick, I would pick Kenny," Madden said. "Snake was a lot cooler than I was. He was a perfect quarterback and a perfect Raider. When you think about the Raiders you think about Ken Stabler."

Stabler was a four-time Pro Bowl selection with the Raiders, leading the franchise to consistent success during the 1970s, including a 32-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the 1977 Super Bowl.

Stabler first showed his professional chops in the game best known for the Immaculate Reception. Mostly forgotten was his replacing starter Daryle Lamonica and leading the Raiders to what seemed to be the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter— until Franco Harris' spectacular catch and run won it for Pittsburgh.

Oakland lost two of its first three games in the next season, 1973, scoring no touchdowns with Lamonica behind center. After a loss to archrival Kansas City, Madden gave Stabler a chance to show what he could do in practice. Stabler did enough for Madden to start him, and the Raiders beat the Cardinals, and then won four straight games after that.

Stabler remained the starter for more than seven seasons, allegedly studying the game plan by the light of a jukebox — if he studied it at all. He prided himself on being able to wing it, and few quarterbacks did it better in the clutch.

But for all of his bravado, Stabler was not a wild thrower. He was one of the most accurate passers of his time.

"The bigger the situation," Madden said, "the calmer he got."

Stabler's favorite songs were playing when he died, from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" to Van Morrison's "Leaves Falling Down," the family said. His brain and spinal cord were donated to Boston University's Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center to support research into degenerative brain disease among athletes, according to the family.

"He was a kind, generous and unselfish man, never turning down an autograph request or an opportunity to help someone in need," the family said. "A great quarterback, he was an even greater father to his three girls, and grandfather to his two 'grand snakes.'"

The Foley, Alabama, native threw for 27,938 career yards over 15 seasons, which also included stints with the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints.

During his college career, Stabler led Alabama to an undefeated 1966 season and was chosen the Sugar Bowl MVP after a 34-7 rout of Nebraska. He also ran for a long touchdown on a rain-soaked field during the 1967 Iron Bowl to lead the Tide to a 7-3 win over Auburn.

Alabama coach Nick Saban got to know Stabler from golf tournaments and the ex-Raiders quarterback's stint as an analyst on Alabama radio broadcasts.

"I think anyone who had the chance to get to know Kenny would appreciate the great person he was and the pride he had for the University of Alabama," Saban said in a statement. "I have had the chance to be around some of the best to ever play college and pro football, and Kenny may have been one of the greatest competitors to ever play the game."

Late condolence but heartfelt just the same. A kid outta high school, my bosses were two Tide alums and man they loved telling Snake stories.
According to them, he made Joe Willie look like an altar boy. This was the mid-70s and believe it or not in a city a 1000 miles from Alabama.
From one lefty to another, Rest easy champ.

I grew up with the Snake as an Oakland Raider fan. He was clutch when it counted, especially if we were behind. We saw many a great games with him at the helm. I'm very impressed at his love of helping others, and the less fortunate. He was always a gentleman. We will root him on to the Hall of Fame as Kenny is inducted. Bless you Kenny Stabler and Bless all of your family.

I grew up in Denver. My dad was a Broncos fan. I couldn't help but be a Raider fan. How could anyone not be a Raider fan after watching what Kenny, Fred, Dave, Cliff & company could do with 2 minutes on the clock. Naturally my dad and I had a amusing if not tense rivalry going on in our home. Commitment to Excellence. I went on to fly jets from U.S. aircraft carriers. Just before retirement in 2003 Kenny came to Okinawa where I was stationed. I will never forget meeting my hero! Rest Easy Kenny. You were GREAT!!

Kenny stabler was in my mind the greatest QB ever. He thrilled millions for May years, and provided leadership tomthevwildrst bunch of football players ever assembled.

September 13, 2015

Kenny was the greatest clutch quarterback ever. When all seemed lost, the Snake would find a way. He wasn't the biggest guy, but he would take the hits to complete the play. He wore his fame with class, always willing to take time for a fan. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times as a bartender @ the Coliseum. R.I.P. Snake.

Kenny Stabler was my favorite football player growing up. I became a Raider fan watching him lead Oakland to the go ahead score in the game of the " Immaculate reception ". He was one of the games greatest quarterbacks, and competitors. I agree with the late Bear Bryant, John Madden if I had to pick one quarterback to win a game for me it would be Kenny Stabler. I will never forget all of the memories. My prayers are with the family. May your love one rest in peace.

Man! I met Ken and George Blanda in South Lake Tahoe at a Casino one nite. They were at the Dice table. I was making crazy bets, and him and George show me how to bet the table. I won enough money to buy my 3 Daughter's 2 weeks of school outfits. That was 35 years ago. Wow! To Great Players. Both of them never let there Stardom go to there Head. Because they didn't have to help me, they could've let me lose all my money.

July 22, 2015

My deepest condolences to the Stabler family. In my life, I have had three sports heroes. First, as a young boy growing up in the Bronx, it was Mickey Mantle. Later after moving to California, it was Willie Mays, the Say Hey Kid. In my young adult years, however, the greatest sports hero was "Snake Stabler" especially in those epic battles with Pittsburg. The greatest Raider, to be sure, he will not be forgotten by the Raider faithful and by any other football fan who appreciated his talent, grit, and "cool under fire" performances.

God Bless Ken Stabler

Mr. Stabler was my first football hero. As a kid growing up in the SF Bay Area in the 70's, I loved the Raiders. Brokenhearted....Feeling like a child of God...
I use to go climb this tree in the back yard and pray my brother didn't have to go to Viet Nam. Alphabetical draft number really was scary. Kids like Wayne Hudgins...use to carry me from that tree to my Mom's supper table when they visited on their shoulders. Then my heart was broken when he was killed in Viet Nam...I feel that loss.as a child would remember and grieve tonight.
So many who fought for our freedom and so many who made us smile...and the troops on holidays. That tree is where I learned to pray. It is where I went when JFK was shot in Dallas....I prayed when they carried my brother off of Foley's football field with a concussion in 1963. We got on our knees on Sunday night...but I got in that tree..at home. A chat with God....what a reception...I thought of Bear Bryant right after my Mom died...Looked at the kitchen clock and it was 3:15pm...2007...Alabama had lost to Auburn the night before. So many people that have touched my life...I pray God has you in His Arms of Love. Rest in peace...I hope we see all our loved ones again .
