Indonesian Plane Crash Victims

Indonesian rescue workers have located the bodies of all 54 people who were on board the Trigana Air Service plane that went down in a mountainous area, according to CNN. There were no survivors, an official said.

The airplane lost contact with air traffic control Sunday, about half an hour into a short flight from Papua’s provincial capital to a town in the mountains, according to CNN.

Search crews discovered the plane’s black box data recorders, which will be analyzed in an effort to learn what caused the plane to crash.

Indonesian rescue workers Tuesday reached the crash site of the passenger plane, according to CNN, a remote area of dense mountain forests blanketed in fog.

The remoteness of the crash site required the use of helicopters to bring evacuation workers to the scene.

Search planes spotted debris on a mountainside Monday, CNN reported, but bad weather halted efforts to reach the crash site on foot and by helicopter.

The flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, the plane’s “black boxes,” were found in good condition, said Henry Bambang Soelistyo, the National Search and Rescue Agency chief.

“The plane was totally destroyed and all the bodies were burned and difficult to identify,” Soelistyo told The Associated Press.

He said all 54 bodies had been recovered and will be taken to Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, so they can be identified.
