Billie Allen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 11, 2016.
Actress Billie Allen, who was one of the first African-American actresses to appear in commercials on television, has died, according to multiple news sources. She was 90.

Allen, who was a close friend of the actress Ruby Dee, died Dec. 29, 2015, at her home in Manhattan, New York. Her daughter, Carolyn Grant, confirmed her death, but no cause was provided.

Although Allen was not as famous as Dee, she played a large role in American theater. Along with the actor Morgan Freeman and other people, she co-founded the Frank Silvera Writers Workshop in Harlem, New York, in 1973. Silvera was an actor, director and acting teacher who had died three years earlier.

Allen, who trained at the Actors Studio in New York, New York, was born Jan. 13, 1925, in Richmond, Virginia. Around the age of 20, she moved to New York City and danced on Broadway shows, including the 1947 musical revue "Caribbean Carnival," 1952's "Four Saints in Three Acts" and "My Darlin' Aida," the 1952 adaptation of Verdi's opera.

After her final Broadway appearance in 1969, she went on to act in the network series "The Phil Silvers Show" alongside Silvers, who played Sgt. Bilko. Allen played a member of the Women's Army Corps; as such, she was among the first African-American actresses with a recurring role on a TV series. Other credits on TV include "Souls of Sin," "Black Like Me" and "Car 54, Where Are You?"

She also was one of the first African-Americans to appear in TV commercials. Diapers, dish soap and other cleaning products were among the products she pitched.

About her role in commercials, she once quipped that African-American consumers could now "worry about dentures, dishpan hands and bad breath, just as everyone else in TV land seems to."

Allen was preceded in death by her second husband, the composer Luther Henderson, who died in 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Grant; a son, Duane Grant Jr.; a brother; a granddaughter and a number of stepchildren.

I was sorry to read about the loss of your loved one. I would like to comfort the family with a scripture in Isiah 25:8" He will swallow up death forever. And the sovereign lord will wipe away the tears from all faces. The reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth. For the lord himself has spoken it.

My children and I had the pleasure of meeting her a few years ago. She was a dear friend of my brother James King for many years. She welcomed us into her home like we were old friends. As one earlier post mentions, she was direct, honest, fun and lively. What a joy to have met someone with such a loving and jovial personality. She will be truly missed by the many lives she has touch. My her soul rest in perfect peace.

My deepest condolences to the Allen family. Losing a loved one in death is one of life's most difficult challenges. At Hosea 13:14, God has promised to empty all the graves as we welcome back to life our loved ones. May you and your family find strength in that promise.

I met Ms. Allen five years ago through my cousin, Barbara Clarke, her friend. I immediately fell in live with her for her dry humor and vast knowledge of Black theater and cultural world. I am deeply sorry about her death. My deepest sympathies to Ms. Allen's family.

My sincere condolences to the family during this time of sorrow. Much comfort can come from fond memories of your loved one. Hope can be found in God's word promising a future filled with all good things. Strength found in his word to endure until God's promise is fulfilled. your dead will livethey will rise up. Awake and shout joyfully, you residents in the dust!...and the earth will let those powerless in death come to life. Tenderly may time heal your sorrow. Gently may friends ease your pain. Softly may peace replace heart ache, and may warmest memories remain.

So sorry for your loss of Billie. She accomplished a lot in her lifetime. Such a high achiever deserves recognition. May your memories of all you recall seeing her do be of comfort to you all. Though it's a privilege and honor to have a loved one live such a long life, we never want to see them go. Throw you burden on the Lord and he will sustain you. Deepest sympathy.

My sincere condolences to the family. It truly a blessing Billie lived a long life because so many people will never see her age. It reminds me of Psalms 90:10 which tells us how our life span is 70 years or 80. Always cherish her memories forever in your heart.
