Margaret Forster Obituary
Forster, one of Britain's most prolific novelists, died Monday morning of cancer at a London hospice. Her husband, the journalist and broadcaster Hunter Davies, announced the death.
Davies said his wife was a cancer survivor. The former teacher had a mastectomy 40 years ago and had been cancer-free until 10 years ago when it returned. Cancer affected her back and spine.
Before starting her writing career, Forster taught at a girls' school in London.
"Georgy Girl" was made into a film that starred Lynn Redgrave as Georgy. Other stars in the movie were Charlotte Rampling, Alan Bates and James Mason. The film featured the eponymous song recorded by the Seekers. The song was a hit, as was the film. The song reached No. 1 in Australia, where the Seekers were from, and No. 2 on Billboard's U.S. Hot 100 chart.
Her novels included "Lady's Maid," "Diary of an Ordinary Woman," "Have the Men Had Enough?" and "The Memory Box." In all, she wrote more than two dozen works of fiction and about a dozen books covering biography, history and memoirs.
She won awards for her fiction and nonfiction, including the J.R. Ackerley Prize for her autobiography, "Precious Lives."

Dear Hunter, I have just learnt of Margaret's death, and send you my heartfelt condolences and best wishes. I only met Margaret a couple of times when we all lived in London and we were both at The Sunday Times. Margaret was the most incredible character, much missed by all who knew her and her work. Of all the authors I have read in quite a long reading life, Margaret Forster's work probably gave me much pleasure. I think I read almost everything she has ever written.
