Tony Phillips Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 19, 2016.
Tony Phillips, a Major League Baseball player and member of the 1989 World Champion Oakland Athletics, died Feb. 17, 2016, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. He was 56.

The Oakland Athletics announced Phillips’ unexpected death Friday. He made the final defensive play against the San Francisco Giants in the memorable 1989 World Series. The championship series, featuring two San Francisco Bay-area teams, was delayed by an earthquake.

Born in 1959, Phillips began his 18-year major league career with Oakland in 1982 at age 23. He was a versatile defender, spending time at second base, shortstop and third base, as well as occasional starts in the outfield.

He was also effective with a bat. Although he did not have outstanding traditional statistics, he had good plate discipline and twice led the majors in walks. His high on-base percentage made him an ideal leadoff hitter. More emphasis on the value of defense and on-base percentage in recent years has led to a greater appreciation of players like Phillips.

In addition to his nine years in Oakland, Phillips played five seasons for the Detroit Tigers. In his later years, he spent time with the Angles, White Sox, Mets and Blue Jays before wrapping up his big-league career in Oakland at age 40 in 1999. He continued to play baseball periodically in independent leagues until 2015.

“Tony will forever be remembered by the fans because he made that last out, and it was a tough ground ball he made a great play on,” former A’s manager Tony La Russa told The San Francisco Chronicle. “He was still in great shape, he was down here at our camp three or four days a week. I’m just in shock.”

His unexpected death prompted statements from both the Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers.

“Tony was an exciting player to watch and became a fan favorite during his years in Detroit. The Tigers organization extends our deepest sympathies to Tony’s family,” the Tigers said in a statement.

Got to know Tony well over the past 6-7 years. He helped me find deserving players for Indy Baseball; had a passion for the game and still believed he could play. Very unselfish to young players who wanted to "live the dream". You are leading off today my friend! RIP

We are immensely shocked and saddened by the passing of our new friend and super friendly and welcoming neighbor,Tony. We will miss his 70's music (He loved Elton John) blasting when he was working/playing or as he called it "razzle dazzling" out in the backyard. What a nice man. Just days ago we were talking baseball, east coast, Arizona, family...Unbelievable. He's gone way too soon. Our deepest condolences to his family.

My condolences to the Phillips family. Tony was a good friend in High School. He dated one of my best friends. He was so kind. If you had Tony for a friend, you were lucky. He always had a kind word or hug to give. He was like a big brother, protector. I hated when he graduated. He was 2 years ahead of me. I had to learn to come out of being shy and taking up for myself. He was an Allstar in every sport he played. He made Roswell Hornets proud!!! Everyone knew he would go Pro. God has gained an angel. RIP my old friend, I will see you again and we can catch up.

Tony was a man "who heard the music" in life. He was "action Jackson", full of LOVE for life and he had respect for people.....that was tony. He told me he could still play the game at 56 and that he had plans to play in an Independent League two weeks ago. On the golf course he was very competitive; in the gym, he was inspirational and "pound for pound" not very many were as gifted as Tony.

Had many intense battles on the basketball floor throughout high school against Tony and his older brother Leonard. Our schools were arch rivals. Tony was rated #11 in the state Top 25 Players as a Sr. He was All-Metro Atlanta. One of the best players I ever played against. Always felt he could have played in the NBA had he chosen that path. Fierce competitor, their leader, did whatever it took to win. A truly gifted athlete. Very saddened at this news. Condolences to the Phillips Family from all of us from North Springs basketball who admired Tony.
