Kolkata Overpass Accident Victims Obituary
More than 100 others were reported missing or unaccounted for. The Vivekananda Road overpass has been under construction since 2009.
An eyewitness told reporters that hundreds of people, many in vehicles, were beneath the overpass at the time of the accident.
The Indian army has deployed rescuers, according to a tweet from a representative of the Indian Ministry of Defense. Two cranes were brought in to lift heavy debris off the cars, trucks and other vehicles that were trapped underneath.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the news on social media.
"Shocked & saddened by collapse of under-construction flyover in Kolkata," Modi wrote. "Took stock of the situation and rescue operations. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in Kolkata."

I was really sorry to read about the tragedy that took place there. An ancient proverb says, "...time and unexpected events overtake them all." Even so, anytime life is lost it is tragic.
