Tommy Kono Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 30, 2016.
Tommy Kono, an Olympic champion weightlifter, died April 24 of liver disease in Honolulu, Hawaii, according to multiple news sources. He was 85.

The 5-foot-6 weightlifter was regarded as one of the greatest of all time in his sport. Over the course of his career, he lifted in four different weight classes and set world records in all of them. He would gain or lose weight to compete in whatever weight class would give the United States the best chance at a medal.

The strategy proved successful. Kono won two Olympic gold medals for the U.S., one at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, and one at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. He won a silver medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. He also won six consecutive world weightlifting championships from 1953 to 1959 and three Pan American Games championships in 1955, 1959, and 1963 before an injury halted his competitive career.

Kono was born June 27, 1930, in Sacramento, California, to parents of Japanese descent. During World War II, he and his family were forced to live in an internment camp by the U.S. government. It was there that he became interested in weightlifting as a way to stay healthy and combat his childhood asthma.

In addition to competitive weightlifting, Kono also participated in bodybuilding competitions, winning the Mr. Universe title in 1954, 1955, 1957, and 1961. He also served as an Olympic weightlifting coach for teams from Mexico, West Germany, and the U.S. between 1968 and 1976. He wrote and spoke extensively about weightlifting and helped to promote the sport as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Kono served as an inspiration to future bodybuilders like Arnold Schwarzenegger, who watched him compete in Vienna, Austria, in 1961. “He told me he was a 13-year-old boy in the audience that day and was so inspired he ran home and started working out,” Kono told The Sacramento Bee in a 2005 interview.

Kono also was an equipment innovator, helping to develop supportive knee and elbow bands that later became standard weightlifting gear.

He was elected to the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame in 1993 and was named Lifter of the Century in 2005 by the International Weightlifting Federation.

I met Mr. Kono and his wife in 1992 when they were in Los Angeles promoting the Honolulu Marathon. I was stunned to meet my greatest sports hero of all time in a random encounter. What a humble gentleman who exuded calm strength. A conversation that I will never forget.

Tommy was my coach. At 38 years old, he convinced me to START lifting. That was nearly 25 years ago and I'm forever grateful for the discipline, encouragement, and strength that stays with me, as well as the life lessons he taught me.

I was just some random woman working out at the YMCA in Honolulu and he approached me to join his team. What a beautiful man and what a wonderful teacher. I featured him in my book and he was so happy with it, he added my story to his last book. I constantly use my Tommy stories in my training and speaking sessions.

He remains one of the greatest influencers of my life and I will miss him deeply. It was always wonderful to be able to swing by the Y on a Saturday morning and find him there. I was there when he received his honors in 1996, and remember well the 5 or 6 six-foot tables weighed down by his medals and trophies.

Tommy Kono was truly one of a kind. I am honored and humbled to have been mentored by him

Sleep well, my friend. Rest in Peace.

I regret that I never met Tommy in person, as he was one of my heroes. I spoke to him on the phone two or three times and we exchanged emails once. He was always gracious, and will always be an inspiration to me.

My deepest condolences to the ohana of the great Tommy Kono. The very early years of my bodybuilding career, I've done a few shows where Tommy was in charge of organizing (AAU) the event. Tommy was a true champion and a gentleman. Later on, he asked me to guest pose at one of his event. After the event, he sent me a letter to show his appreciation for my performance. I owe a lot to this man, and I will cherish that letter for my grandkids kids, to let them know that I truly knew a true champion, in my youthful years. Along with Timmy Leong and Mits Kawashima, they were thee legends/pioneers, who launched bodybuilding/powerlifting sports in Hawaii. Thanks Tommy, for all you did for Hawaii. I will truly miss your presence. RIP, my friend. Aloha!

To the family:

I never got a chance to meet Mr. Kono. However, I find it a pleasure to write to family members when they have lost a dear loved one, to express my condolences.

I remember when my father, and later my mother, died. It was so hurtful. When people stopped by our home and expressed their sympathies, we felt so much love and support. This is what bereaved family members need at such a time.

I did not know that Tommy was 85. He lived longer than my father and mother. I am sure you are grateful to have had him for such a long time. Since Eternity is endowed in every human being, no one is eager to die, no matter what age.

May the God of tender mercies comfort each of you. The Holy Writings provide a paradise hope for those who are no longer with us. We await this wonderful time period. We can trust that it will come true in time--Titus 1:2.

Love and best wishes to all.
