Steve McElvene Obituary
McElvene collapsed at his home in New Haven, Indiana, according to a release from the school. An official cause of death was not immediately available.
"We are devastated at this news," Dayton coach Archie Miller said in the school's release. "Any death is a tragedy, but for someone so young, who worked so hard to have his dreams within reach, it's hard to put into words how painful this is. Our hearts and prayers go out to Steve's family. My family, our team and our staff will have to pull together, not only in support of Steve's family, but in support of each other at this terrible time."
McElvene set a single-season record for Dayton with 56 blocks last season. The 6-foot-11 center averaged over six points per game along with over five rebounds in his first full season with Dayton. He had six points and six rebounds in the Flyers' opening round loss to Syracuse in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Bernadette McGlade, the commissioner of the Atlantic 10, said in a statement, “The entire Atlantic 10 family is heartbroken over the loss of Dayton’s Steve McElvene. He was an exceptional young man with a bright future, both on the basketball court and in life. A life cut short is tragic for all. The prayers, thoughts and support from the A-10 community go out to the University of Dayton, Flyer Men’s Basketball and most especially to Steve’s family.”

I know this entry comes a little late but i definitely feel the pain of the family.... 9 years ago, we lost our oldest son at the age of 14 to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy as well. He was a standout basketball player in Trotwood Ohio only a freshman in his first year of high school. Your family definitely has my prayers and support. I just watched the UD game and saw the Team presented you with a tournament ring. Such a Beautiful thing. Such wonderful support. Like my son, I read wonderful things about your baby. My baby was a gentle giant. 6 foot 5. His name was Lamar Boo Davis Jr. You can read his story if you google his name. Im sending this to you because when this happened to us,u feel so alone and helpless. We had an outpouriong of support and love from all over. I just wanted you to know that you are not alone, and from one mother to another I feel your pain and you are loved.... The good news is it does get easier to deal with as time goes on. Adjusting to a new normal. Hold dear all the Beautiful memories of your sweet young man.... God will pull you through.... I pray Peace and Comfofort to your family through the holiday season...

I am a professor at UD and I had Steve in three of my classes since he enrolled at UD. Steve was a wonderful human being and his authenticity was a refreshing relief. His respect and sincerity is something that I will always remember. He was a young man that had clearly been raised with the values that exemplify all that a young person should have in their upbringing. Steve was a joy to have in class and his quiet gentle soul spoke volumes to all of his classmates. When Steve spoke up in class we all listened.
Our prayers go out to you; Steve will be missed. I saw Steve just a few weeks ago and joked with him about how I would say, "Child you need to sit down, it hurts my neck to talk to you when you are standing!" He thought that was funny.. I was serious..
Steve, the angels are singing a joyful song that you are there in spite of the pain that we are feeling because of our loss.
