Rosalie Chris Lerman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 21, 2016.
Rosalie Chris Lerman, Holocaust survivor and educator, died May 20, 2016 of natural causes according to multiple news sources. She was 90.

Born Krysia Rozalia Laks in Starachowice, Poland, in 1926, she survived the infamous death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and later emigrated to the United States with her husband, Miles Lerman, who she married in a Displaced Persons camp after the war.

Despite not speaking English when they came to America, the couple thrived. They owned a chicken farm in Vineland, New Jersey as well as a home heating oil distributorship. However, despite success in their new life, they did not turn a blind eye to their painful past.

Miles Lerman was a founder and chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., while she lectured widely about her personal Holocaust experience.

Sara J. Bloomfield, director of the museum, told The Philadelphia Inquirer that she was Miles’ “secret weapon.”

“She had a remarkable combination of traits,” Bloomfield said, “She was warm and wise and compassionate, and had really keen people smarts. She made people feel special. She had a really unique capacity for empathy. You’d have to work really hard not to love Chris Lerman.”

Her daughter, Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer recalled her mother’s positive outlook, despite the bleak experiences of her youth.

“She always believed compassion was the strongest weapon and the driver of everything good in civilization. She believed compassion would win and life would be restored,” she told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lerman and her two sisters survived Auschwitz-Birkenau. Her daughter said they felt an obligation to look out for one another after losing their mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband Miles Lerman, who died in 2008. She is survived by her daughter and son, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

My deepest condolences. I spoke with Chris many times on the phone, after the death of Miles. I was a close friend of Miles Lerman. If the family could reach out to me, I am planning to make a trip to Auschwitz for the sole purpose of honoring Miles and Chris. Miles and I had a very unique and special relationship. David knows who I am. If someone from the family could reach out to me I would be most appreciative. Dr. MichaelEErickson, a theologian, and I can be reached at 443–7 94–9469. May God bless you

Lerman and many other holocaust survivors have done their best to be sure that the world never forgets that horrible crime in hopes that it is never repeated. We are thankful for their self sacrafising spirit and look forward to the time of global peace promised. " the meek will possess the earth, And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." -Psalms 37:11

A sympathetic awareness of another's suffering or adversity coupled with a desire to alleviate it. As I read the obituary I found myself to find comfort in her compassion for others. It probably save her from the hurt of what she had live through. How wonderful, we are created with these quality that affect us so greatly in our life. It restore hope in mankind. Compassion is what our creator fell for all of us, even giving his Son. John3:16. I am so sorry for your loss

I knew Chris and Miles, not as the notables or famous people they were, but as friends of my parents. They were both very kind people and I remember sharing many meals with them in Palm Beach. May your happy memories be a comfort.

There are no words to put on paper that could ever say how sorry most of us are for the emotional and physical devastation experienced by this lovely woman and others. Mrs. Lerman sounds like a strong survivor and someone I wish I had known. To her family I send my condolences. May she rest in peace.

Dear Rosalie's Daughter...My condolences to you and your family with the loss of your mother. Her story was heart wrenching but when I read where she said she had 70 good years, I thought "I wish I had known this woman". I am an 80 year old Canadian woman, not Jewish, and first found out about what was happening to the Jewish people when I was 15 and living in Toronto, Canada. I made it my business to read & find out everything I could about what happened to the Jewish people in the war & was forever touched. No matter what tragedy or circumstance happened in my life, I always faced it head on by reminding myself about what happened to people like your mother, that those survivors handled far worse than what I was experiencing. You are very lucky to have had such a woman like Rosalie for your mother. Always keep the good memories in the fore front. Again, my condolences to you.

I express my deep sympathy for the loss of your great and beautiful mother. As a Jewish American woman in my 50's i am consumed with the incredulous happenings of the holocaust and believe i would not have survived it as your mother did. Her spirit and approach to life is not only a lesson but to all of the survivors who are passing...2 others thus week alone....their lives can never be replaced. We can and will remember. I shed a tear.
