Russian Boating Accident Victims Obituary
The freshwater lake in Karelia, a region that is about 75 miles east of Russia’s border with Finland, according to Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the nation’s main state investigative agency. Two boats and a raft were caught in the storm. Russian news sources reported that two of the boats capsized.
There were 37 survivors who reportedly were able to swim to a lake island.
Ekaterina Biktimirova, Karelia’s Culture Minister, told the Russian News Agency TASS: "The group of 49 people started its voyage on Saturday.
"There were children between 12 and 15 years old with a guardian. They were caught by a storm overnight. There are casualties.
"Rescuers have found 11 bodies of children, two more children are still missing."
In a post on Twitter, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 10 of the dead children were from the Moscow region.
A criminal investigation was initiated to determine who organized the outing despite warnings of dire weather.
