Italy Train Crash Victims Obituary
The two trains were headed in opposite directions, one from Andria to Corato and the other on the opposite route. Both were on the same tracks, resulting in a head-on collision. Both trains were operated by area commuter rail service Ferrotramviaria SpA, a private company based in Bari.
The crash occurred at about 11:30 a.m. local time. Each engine was carrying four passenger cars. Thousands of people use the line each day, according to the BBC.
"Surely one of the two trains shouldn't have been there,” railway police commander Giancarlo Conticchio said to Italian all-news channel Sky TG24. "Surely there was an error. We need to determine the cause of the error."
Italian Premier Matteo Renzi called the crash "a moment of tears," offered condolences to the families of victims, and promised a full investigation. "I think we must have absolute clarity on this. We will not stop until we understand what happened."
In addition to those who died, dozens were injured in the crash. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing, and officials expect the number of confirmed casualties to rise.
