Hector Babenco Obituary
Denise Winther of Babenco's HB Films says the director died Wednesday night of a heart attack at Sao Paulo's Sirio-Libanes Hospital.
The Argentine-born Brazilian director was nominated for an Oscar for “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” which was released in 1985. The movie was also nominated for best picture and actor William Hurt won the best actor Academy award for his role in the movie.

Babenco also directed the movie "Ironweed" with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, who were both nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress Oscars.
His other movies include “At Play in the Fields of the Lord” and “Foolish Heart.”
His last film was “My Hindu Friend”, starring Willem Dafoe. It tells the story of a film director close to death.
Babenco was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and moved permanently to Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1969.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and daughter, Janka.
