A birthday cake adorned with candles and sparklers fell off a table onto the carpeted floor, setting it ablaze, according to French police.
The victims were between the ages of 18 and 25, according to local media reports.
Officials indicated that the burning of soundproofing material in the basement of the Cuba Libre bar emitted a toxic gas, which contributed to the high death toll. This was the deadliest fire in France since 2005.
“I express my solidarity and compassion with the victims’ families,” tweeted French President Francois Hollande.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives, or were injured in the horrific fire in Rouen, France.
