John Saunders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 10, 2016.
John Saunders, a Canadian-born sports journalist who worked for ESPN and ABC, died Aug. 10, 2016, in New York, according to ESPN and other news sources. He was 61.

No cause of death was announced.

ESPN tweeted the news: “We are heartbroken to report longtime ESPN personality John Saunders has died. He was 61.”

In a statement, ESPN President John Skipper said, “John was an extraordinary talent and his friendly, informative style has been a warm welcome to sports fans for decades. His wide range of accomplishments across numerous sports and championship events is among the most impressive this industry has ever seen.

“More importantly, John was a beloved and devoted family man who cared deeply about people and causes, as evidenced by his long-standing efforts as a passionate board member for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. … Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”

Saunders, who was born Feb. 2, 1955, in Ajax, Ontario, joined ESPN in 1986, hosting the sports network’s program titled “The Sports Reporters.” At the time of his death, he was the host of ABC’s coverage of college football.

Before moving to the U.S. to work as a sports anchor at a Baltimore, Maryland, television station, Saunders was a news director for an Ontario radio station and a sports anchor at an Ontario TV station.

Sports writer Adam Schefter tweeted, “Sickened and saddened to hear of loss of our colleague and friend, John Saunders. What a nice man. What a great man.” His tweet was accompanied by a photograph of a smiling Saunders.

Off screen, Saunders advocated for juvenile diabetes research. He was a founding member of the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research.

Saunders is survived by his wife, Wanda, and two daughters, Aleah and Jenna.

I wanted to add another message in case i didn't here. I went to high school withJohn and Bernie in Chateauguay QC. John was always an inspiration to all who knew him. We were so fortunate to have John come to Montreal for a 40th high school reunion the year before. John acted as our MC being the only celebrity journalist among us.

It was a wonderful celebration and we were all reminded how special John had always been, and why he inspired so many folks during his life.

We all followed John and his lovely family on Facebook and were devastated for them especially, at his loss.

We will never forget you my friend.

I can't say that I am an avid sports fan but I always enjoyed John's reporting. So professional, such a gentlemen no unnecessary drama. Sending prayers for peace and healing for his family.

Such a loss.
I also grew up in Ajax, Ontario and I attended high school with John's brother Bernie. I often watched John on Toronto News City Pulse and later ESPN and always felt a warming "home town pride" also when I saw Bernie's pro hockey cards and saw him some years after high school..He spoke very highly of his big brother John, so proud.

I have no more words, and I hope that knowing that my thoughts and prayers are with the Saunders family can be of some comfort.
God bless.

My most sincerest and heartfelt condolences go out to the immediate and extended family of Mr. John Saunders. He was a great sports commentator and a professional that I enjoyed listening to especially on Sundays prior to pro football game time. If it came out of his mouth...you could believe it. He was very knowledgeable about sports in general (and particular) and appeared quite poised as he presented sports information with confidence and ease. "Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way" (Booker T. Washington). Respectfully submitted by:

Living only a short distance from ESPN Studios, I felt John Saunders was part of our community.
He was the "Cream of the Crop" of sports reporters, fair, well spoken, dignified, and boy did he know his sports.
I will miss seeing him this fall especially around football season.
May John Saunders soul rest in God`s eternal peace, heaven has received a wonderful person!
Deepest condolences to the Saunders Family and John`s extended family at ESPN. He will be missed.
