Dabney Montgomery Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2016.
Dabney Montgomery, a member of the Tuskegee Airmen who marched for civil rights with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., died Sept. 3, 2016, of natural causes, according to The Associated Press. He was 93.

Montgomery was a ground crewman of the all-black Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. He was stationed in southern Italy during the war.

He later marched with King during civil rights protests in Selma, Alabama.

He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007. The medal, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is one of the highest civilian awards in the United States.

Montgomery grew up in Selma and was drafted in 1943. He had attended Selma University for a year and was trained in clerical duties. He joined the Tuskegee Airmen as part of their ground support.

“When I saw guys who looked like me flying airplanes, I was filled with hope that segregation would soon end,” Montgomery told The Wall Street Journal in 2015.

After the war, he earned a degree in religious education and moved to New York City. He returned to Selma in 1965 to march with King as one of the civil rights leader's bodyguards. His daughter told The Associated Press that soles of his shoes and the tie he wore on the march would be part of the permanent collection at the new National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

He married his wife, Amelia, in 1971 after meeting her in a Harlem, New York, church.

Hello,
I met Mr Montgomery when I was in New York. He gave me information on Schomburg Library. And historical information on the First AME Zion Church in New York where Aunt Harriet Tubman visited

Montgomery, as he was known when I knew him, was an astonishing humble and simultaneously proud man. He worked part time for Project FIND. He regaled me with a few Tuskegee Airmen stories and was very proud when he was headed to DC for the Million Man March. He shared his victory in getting an ID for a senior using census data from the 1920s!. But he never told me his whole story, especially about the Selma march. I wish he had. I never gave him the honor he deserved. A true American hero, big time.

I know I'm late with this. My condolences to all who knew Mr. Montgomery. I only talked to this noble gentleman only once by phone, back in 2013. I was doing research into my family history Mr. Montgomery did confirm to me that my great uncle was once a member of Mother AME Zion Church; I will forever be thankful to him for the information he shared.

November 1, 2016

Hello Mrs. Montgomery: I meet Mr. Montgomery many years ago when I was tour coordinator for Braggin' About Brooklyn. The moment I we met at AME Zion Church that day I was in awe of his warm, thoughtful and loving spirit. I tried staying in touch with him and, in fact, one day he brought me to his home, mentioned he'd written a book about his experience as a Tuskegee Airman and I was so excited to support his storytelling and bought his book which he lovingly autographed for me. I also met you, Mrs. Montgomery that day. My deepest sympathies on the death of your beloved husband. Hold tight to all of your fantabulous memories and he will forever be in your heart. I have a picture of the two of us that will forever remind me of this wonderful man. Much love, Elizabeth Rankin-Fulcher

To the family of Mr. Montgomery: May God bless you and sustain you at this time and always. Mr. Montgomery definitely reminds me of our daddy who was also a World War II veteran. These gentlemen, as well as others, paved the way for us. Certainly, they endured their burdens in the heat of the day. Find comfort in these words: Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal. May he rest in peace. Family, be blessed!!!

This is an awesome story of one who has paved the way. Paved the way and shown the way for blacks and all young people feeling disenfranchised. Mr. Montgomery didn't let his color hold him back. He did what it took to get ahead. He got an education too. He has set an example. He didn't use up space on this earth.

My father was a Tuskegee Airman. He dies September 4, 2004. His good friend, George Giddings was a Tuskegee airman who died this year as well. We all loved these men and will miss them terribly. They were heroes who were never rewarded for their service. They were great men. My Mom is 95 and lives with me. We have a little Tuskegee museum in our basement honoring these great men. We extend our deepest respect, and love to the Montgomery family.
