James Galanos Obituary
He died on October 30th of natural causes at his house in West Hollywood, according to his friend, the designer Ralph Rucci.
"I loved him very much," Rucci said. "There could never have been a Ralph Rucci without Galanos."
"It's what's inside a dress that counts," Galanos told The New York Times in 1981. "If you can turn a dress inside out and see that the workmanship is clean as a whistle, that's quality. ... Quality is more important than wildly innovative styles."

Galanos trained in Paris in the 1940s in the fashion house of Robert Piguet. He opened his first store in Beverly Hills in 1951. Galanos gained well known clients such as Rosalind Russell, Diana Ross, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland. He did the costumes for Judy Garland for her television special.
He was most associated with first lady Nancy Reagan. She selected Galanos to design her inaugural gown in 1981.
"I wouldn't ask anybody else but Jimmy," she told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2006. "It was just a natural. I don't know of any clothes that were made as well as Jimmy's."
Galanos won many awards during his career including the Coty Fashion Award and the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award.

My condolences to the Galanos family for your loss. Although I never met him, it appears that James "Jimmy" was an amazing fashion designer. I have to agree, that if it's "clean as a whistle in the inside, that's a quality garment ". May you cherish the memories you shared with your loved one and may you find comfort from knowing that one day soon death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.

I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Galanos during my time in California and was struck by his humble-ness. He was so creative and had such style! You we a giant, Jimmy and like people who really accomplish great things in life, you never had to mention it... WE KNEW!
