2016 Oakland Building Fire Victims Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 3, 2016.
At least 36 people are confirmed dead in a building fire in Oakland, California, that began Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, according to CNN.

The building, a warehouse collective where artists live and work, was the scene of a large party when the fire broke out, according to news reports. Firefighters arrived at the location at 11:32 p.m. By that time the fire had spread to much of the building. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the building was not equipped with smoke detectors or a working sprinkler system.

“A majority of the fatalities were found up on the second floor,” Oakland Fire Chief Teresa Deloach-Reed told reporters Saturday. “It must have been a very fast-moving fire.”

The number of missing people has been estimated from attendees of the gathering who have not been accounted for yet. A search of the building is ongoing.

“This is a true loss for the city, for the firefighters who responded and the people who lost family and friends. It’s just tragic, a real tragedy,” Deloach-Reed told KPIX-TV.

My condolences to all of the families who lost their love ones. I have lived in Oakland for over 40 yrs and this is one of the saddest days here. I live approx 10 blocks and woke up hearing the helicopters hovering over the site. The victims are on my.heart, so young, think of them as my children. Families, you are in my thoughts and prayers. RIP Dear Ones.
