Bob Coburn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 18, 2016.
Bob Coburn, the longtime host of the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline," has died, according to multiple news sources. He was 68.

Los Angeles radio station KLOS 95.5, announced Coburn's death on its website. The station said he died Saturday of lung cancer after being diagnosed earlier this year. Coburn had been at the station since 1980.

Coburn was known to rock fans as the host of “Rockline” from 1981 until the end of the show’s run in 2014. Coburn would interview rock musicians, and fans could call in live and ask questions directly to their music heroes.

Rockers who appeared on the show with Coburn included Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, and Joe Walsh. Ozzy Osbourne appeared on the program 19 times. A big moment on the show was in 1994 when Axl Rose and Slash from Guns N’ Roses did their last interview together.

Two musicians who held out and did not appear on Coburn’s show were Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton.

The final “Rockline” broadcast took place Dec. 22, 2014.

In a statement released by Westwood One, Coburn noted that "the world has changed from an innovative, unique idea back in 1981 to one of near constant exposure for artists in 2014. With the internet, Twitter accounts, hundreds of television channels, and a more sophisticated press, artists are now literally at the fingertips of their fans. 'Rockline' is no longer the invaluable tool to connect fans with their Rock & Roll heroes, it has become but one of many. ... Now is the time to pass the mantle."

Rockers paid tribute to Coburn on social media:

Def Leppard said, “RIP #BobCoburn host of #RockLine & @955KLOS. A true gentleman!”

From rock band Tesla: "Sad to hear the loss of #BobCoburn host of #RockLine & @955KLOSA. A true gentleman and a class act. We've lost a classic" – Brian

Paul Stanley of KISS: “So sad. Bob Coburn was a lovely guy and the spirit of kindness. Thank you for your support. RIP my friend.”

Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine: “RIP #Rockline host #BobCoburn. A musical IQ and warm heart at the top of the charts. Thank you for everything.”
