Fort Lauderdale Airport Shooting Victims Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 6, 2017.
At least five people have been killed and nine wounded in a shooting attack at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, according to multiple news reports.

The attack took place in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2 just before 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2017. A spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff’s Department said that the shooter is in custody. The motive for the shooting is not known, but the perpetrator is believed to have acted alone.

Airport officials suspended flights and closed the airport temporarily.

“Our community extends its thoughts, prayers, and support to the victims and their families,” Fort Lauderdale Mayor John P. “Jack” Seller said in a statement.

Among the victims were three people who flew into Fort Lauderdale to board cruise ships headed for the Caribbean.

Olga Woltering, 84, of Marietta, Georgia, was going on a cruise with her husband, Ralph, who was celebrating his 90th birthday. He survived the attack.

Terry Andres, 62, of Norfolk, Virginia, was going on a cruise with his wife, Ann, to celebrate his birthday, which is later this month. She was unharmed during the attack.

Michael Oehme, 57, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, had flown to Florida with his wife, Kari, for a cruise. She injured her shoulder but was expected to recover.
