Lord Snowdon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 13, 2017.
Lord Snowdon, known for his 18-year marriage to Great Britain's Princess Margaret as well as for his work as a photographer and filmmaker, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2017. He was 86.

Snowdon, who married the sister of Queen Elizabeth II in 1960, was unusual in that he continued his work – he served as the royal photographer – even while married to Princess Margaret.

Born Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1930, he had an established career as a society photographer by the time he was married to Margaret. Nonetheless, his lack of wealth and artistic lifestyle, as well as their discretion while courting, made their engagement a surprise to the public. Their May 6, 1960, marriage was the first televised royal wedding.

Armstrong-Jones became the Earl of Snowdon a little more than a year after they were married, in part to allow his and Margaret's first child, David, Viscount Linley, to be born with a title. The pair also had a daughter, Lady Sarah, in 1964.

Their marriage lasted until 1978, with Snowdon declining offers to write a book or even speak about the experience in the press. Later that same year, he married Lucy Mary Lindsay-Hogg (born Davies), with whom he fathered another daughter, Lady Frances Armstrong-Jones, in 1979. His second marriage ended in 2000 after it was revealed that he also fathered another son, Jasper William Oliver Cable-Alexander, in 1998.

In later years, Snowdon focused on advocating for polio vaccinations for children around the world.

Lord Snowdon is survived by his children and by several grandchildren. Princess Margaret died in 2002.

I have always felt a certain rapport with lord snowdon as we share a birthday , and shall always remember watching the royal wedding from my dormitory room at Baylor university in 1960. My prayers are with his soul ,and kind remembrances.

Lord Snowdon assuredly kept his own identity and that possession often fades in the celebrity of life. However, there yet remains a common factor in all no matters who lives it. Ecclesiastes 3:1-22.

Anthony Armstrong Jones became a household name, even in America, in the 1950s-60s. I think he deserves respect for keeping his own counsel respecting his life with Princess Margaret and continuing in his profession even after joining the royal family. Otherwise, it can only be said that he had a fascinating life. R.I.P.
