Edward Tipper Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 11, 2017.
Edward Tipper, one of the World War II paratroopers whose experiences were dramatized on the TV series “Band of Brothers,” died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, in Lakewood, Colorado, according to The Associated Press. He was 95.

Tipper was a member of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. His unit was part of the Allied D-Day invasion, parachuting into German-occupied France. Their experiences in the European theater were dramatized on the HBO series “Band of Brothers,” based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s book of the same name.

Tipper lost an eye, and his legs were broken when a mortar shell exploded near him during fighting in Carentan. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Actor Bart Ruspoli portrayed him on the TV series.

Tipper was born Aug. 3, 1921, in Detroit. He volunteered for the paratroopers following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The D-Day invasion was his first combat jump.

After being injured, he was hospitalized for a year. He was discharged from the military in 1945 and obtained a master’s degree, becoming a high school teacher. He married later in life and had a daughter.

The shadow has finally grown to full length for a truly great American. One who lived to the fullest extent and saw well beyond what most who have existed would ever experience. A man who not only helped rid the world of fanatical tyranny decades ago but a man who went on to enlighten and inspire generations of young minds. If that doesn't define a great human being, I don't know what does. Rest easy Mr. Tipper. Have a joyous eternity. I'm proud to know you existed.

A true American hero of the Greatest Generation. There are not many men of Edward Tipper's caliber still alive who fought through D-Day and eventually helped liberate wartime Europe. To his memory we owe a great debt for our freedom and liberties as American Citizens. Rest well soldier for you have done your duty and made your countrymen proud! You will be remembered as a great American whose honor is a lasting legacy to all!

There is very rarely a day in my life since the series, that I have not at least THOUGHT of, if not mentioned, Band of Brothers, to someone. Late yesterday was yet another that I spoke at length about it. With a friend who had never seen it once, much less many times. As I definitely have. So sad to see this today.
Bless the family. And all of his loved ones.
