Paul O'Neill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 6, 2017.
Paul O'Neill, the creative music mastermind who founded the progressive rock band Trans-Siberian Orchestra, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017. He was 61.

The cause of death was not immediately available. The band announced the death on its official Facebook page.

"The entire Trans-Siberian Orchestra family, past and present, is heartbroken to share the devastating news that Paul O’Neill has passed away from chronic illness. "He was our friend and our leader -- a truly creative spirit and an altruistic soul. This is a profound and indescribable loss for us all."

O'Neill was born Feb.23, 1956, in New York City. He started playing the guitar with several rock bands while in high school.

He launched his professional music career during the 1970s with Slowburn, his first prog rock band, but he abandoned the project because he was displeased with the final recordings. He gained experience, however, which would serve him well during the 1980s and '90s.

He soon joined Leber-Krebs Inc., the music management company that worked with big-name bands such as Aerosmith, the New York Dolls, Def Leppard, and Joan Jett.

In the 1980s, O'Neill promoted the tours of Madonna and Sting in Japan, as well as major rock music festivals there.

Later in the decade, O'Neill co-produced Aerosmith's 1986 and 1987 albums, "Classics Live I" and "Classics Live II." Soon after, he struck up a friendship with John and Criss Oliva, the founders of the heavy metal band Savatage, and Savatage member Al Pitrelli. The band was known for its 1986 album "Fight for the Rock" among others during the late '80s and early '90s.

During the mid-90s, O'Neill formed Trans-Siberian Orchestra along with Savatage's John Oliva and Pitrelli, joined by keyboardist Robert Kinkel. The arena rock band went on to stage huge rock productions in 1999 after finishing "The Christmas Attic," the group's second album.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra has sold more than 10 million albums.

I continue to be crushed by Paul’s passing. He and I worked together at Leber Krebs and quickly became family. Paul was like a big brother to me. He took care of me always. I have so many stories and memories in my mind of all the wonderful things he did for me and everyone else. Every day he would walk in and have a New York Times newspaper to give to me and quiz me later on in the day. He gave me several books from all of his inspirations, such as Charles Dickens and beautiful short stories. He also gave me a vhs tape of his most favorite movie of all time. He was my mentor and he genuinely took me under his wing. I helped him with his cryptic notes of writing the rock opera that would ultimately become a Savatage album to which he gave me credit for on the album and I did not even know it for many years after. After I had done that for him, and trust me...he had a meager income like I did, he sent me my first dozen roses I have ever received as a little young girl at approximately 24 years old.
In my heart, I still think of him as my best friend. I miss him so much!

We were at the show last night in San Antonio. Loved it as usual. We've gone fourteen years in a row and have never been disappointed. It's a Christmas tradition for us.....We were so sad to hear of Pauls passing....Such a talented man but more importantly, from the messages I've read ,he was a wonderful human being...He definitely left this earth too early but what a legacy he's left behind..How proud his family must be of their son, brother, husband and dad.....You did a great job, Paul..no one could ask for more..

To the Entire Family: Thank you for allowing us into your lives... Paul was a brilliant human being. He worked tirelessly and gave all of himself to his passion and his work. Very little rest; it was all about his music and the magic he created. We, his audience were given the best of Paul. The sacrifices he made... he touch our lives in such an amazing way. His concerts were "productions." He managed to touch all of our senses. Our sense of sight and sound was exhilarated by the flames on stage, the "snow" falling from above touched each one of us as it touched our heads and of course he touched our hearts with the lyrics. There is no one quite like Paul. He will be missed but never forgotten. Our lives have been blessed because of him. I am proud to have known him. And I will always remember one final thing: his generosity was profound. God gained an angel on April 5th; the choir in heaven I am sure is magnificent because he is there. Until we meet again you will be forever in our hearts. We will support Desi with whatever she needs. Your neighbors... David and Lisa Fry

An Angel on Earth has gone to his Heavenly home. TSO has been a part of my life for years and what I look forward to the most every Christmas season. Going to 2 shows a year had become my ritual. His music has and still brings me so much happiness and will always and forever. Prayers for his lovely wife, daughter and TSO family. What I love the best was his love for helping and giving to others. What I wouldn't have done to sit and talk with with this gift and visionary from God for an evening. He has made me a better person. Rest in Peace Mr Paul O'Neill, you will be truly missed by the world. ❤

My heart broke at your passing. You were a kind gentle soul with a vision and a love for your fellow man. You saw the good all around you lead us by your example. You brought a lasting legacy to all and we will all miss you very much. I am only a fan, but I pray for your family and for all your extended TSO family. I know they hurt so much. I pray you find peace and guide those left behind. Your light and shining example should never dim as we will keep your spirit alive.

Your heart, soul, and compassion meant the world to me and my children. Your talent, dedication, vision, and caring helped one of my daughters through a very difficult time, developed a love of learning to play the guitar and the violin in two other of my children , created wonderful memories for some of my grandchildren- even stopped a bully from harassing (and depressing) my grandson because the bully was "impressed" that my grandson saw the show, and saw it and felt the fire from the third row- and was so often my "light and the end of a tunnel." You brought hope and magic to the mundane. We'll remember you for your musical genius, your kindness, your enthusiasm, and your smile. You were a good man and the world is a better place for your having been here. It was my and my family's privilege to have met and conversed with you several times over the years, as well as to have been in attendance of your last show. You will be greatly missed, but the kindness that you witnessed a Christmas Eve long ago you expounded far and wide and reminded us to carry love, hope, compassion, and kindness forward all the days of our lives, and because of that, it will continue throughout generations to come. Well done, Mr. O'Neill. Rest now in peace in the arms of our Savior.

Paul O'Neill was a genius ! He was the leader of a musical group that changed the hearts and minds of all that heard their music ! I have read many talk about his giving heart to them . I was fortunate enough to be able to hear TSO in concert a few times . The experience was so positive and still makes me want to see them again and again . Good music feeds our soul and certainly Paul will continue his gift in Heaven ! The music will never stop ! Thanks Paul for your work on Earth . To his family and loved ones , you will be reunited with him one day . Continue the dream !

Paul was a gentleman, a kind and sincere person in what is sometimes a very competitive, self-serving business. I met him on the very first tour of TSI at a small theater in Wilkes-Barre, PA

After the show he stopped me on the way out of the theatre to thank me for covering the show (I was a Music Critic), for a newspaper at the time.

His congeniality led to what would become a nice friendship even when the band became huge and was subsequently playing arenas.

The business has lost a real musical innovator and me, a friend.

RIP Paul!

And for that music, I am grateful from the bottom of my heart. May he rest in peace.

The world has lost such an amazingly multi-faceted genius. Desiree, Rachel, and Ireland were his inspiration for so many things the public will never know. He remains here with his music and writings and quite sure he and Winston are having quite the conversation. From the bottom of our hearts we cared about him on all the tours your family has been on, and it feels like we have been hit hard in the heart.
Nothing we can do but carry on, try to be as kind as he was, and miss him.

TSO has always been a favorite band and a family holiday tradition. We met Paul at Detroit airport a couple years ago as he was on the same flight as us to LGA , the day after the opening TSO season show in Toledo OH, which we had attended. He was one of the most gracious and gifted entertainers ever. He was nice enough to talk with us. I still treasure the guitar pick he gave me, and I remember our conversation that day.
He will always be admired and revered.
