Adrian Booth Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2017.
Adrian Booth, a versatile film actress who also took pies to the face alongside the Three Stooges, died Sunday, April 30, 2017. She was 99.

Relatives of the actress announced Booth's death in a post via social media.

Booth appeared in several Three Stooges short films including a memorable pie-throwing scene in "Three Sappy People." She played Sherry, a spoiled wife. Other Stooges shorts included "You Nazty Spy!", "Oily to Bed, Oily to Rise," and "Rockin' Thru the Rockies."

She was born Virginia Pound July 26, 1917, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

During the 1930s, when she became a contract player with Columbia Pictures, studio executives renamed her Lorna Gray. She played parts in "Flying G-Men" alongside Robert Paige, "Pest From the West" with Buster Keaton, and the above-mentioned Stooges film shorts.

Her films included "Red River Range," a 1938 film starring John Wayne; "O, My Darling Clementine," a 1943 film starring the country music singer Roy Acuff as a singing sheriff; and "Hold 'Em Navy." In the latter film, her birth name appeared in the credits.

Booth also played the lead character's secretary, Gail Richards, in Republic Pictures' 1944 "Captain America" film serials about the comic book superhero.

After leaving Columbia in 1945, she took a different stage name, Adrian Booth, and had retained the name ever since. She retired from her film career after marrying the actor David Brian in 1949; he preceded her in death in 1993.

In 2007, Booth told writer John Beifuss that she had a great time working for Republic Pictures in films such as "Along the Oregon Trail" and "Home on the Range."

"They were so good to me," Booth said. "Every time I started a picture, my boss would send me flowers."

After appearing in the Three Stooges film shorts, she became good friends with the Stooge Larry Fine. She called Fine, who died in 1975, "a very sweet boy."

For her work in Western films and TV series, Booth received the Golden Boot Award in 1998. She was a frequent film festival attendee even into her 90s.

Adrian Booth/Lorna Gray as I saw her in Stooge shorts was an extremely beautiful, versatile actress, who looked like she was really having fun in those films. I'm glad she remembered Larry Fine as "a sweet boy" as I'm sure she was and will be remembered as a sweet, insightful person as well. I only wish I had a chance to hear her memoirs first-hand.

My Dear "Auntie" Adrian, I was so blessed, being an "adopted" member of your family. You were the epitome of class and elegance. Your kindness and generosity will remain in my heart always. I am so thankful for the time we were able to spend together, and staying with you at your home was something I will truly treasure. I love you, and my sadness at your passing is only surpassed by knowing you are with your David and the Lord. I will miss you dearly...

I met her at the first Buster Keaton convention in Muskegon, Michigan in the early 1990s. She was SO vivacious and lovely. For years, I thought about getting in touch with her, but didn't want to bother her. I regret that now, for she was a treasure, a beautiful woman inside and out, one of the last links with a good-hearted, wonderful era; and I wish I had her for a friend.

I remember Miss Booth as an actress at the old Republic Pictures studio in such serials films as Perils of Nyoka (1942), Captain America (1943), Federal Operator 99 (1945), Daughter of Don Q (1946) and many other films.

But more importantly I know her as a devout follower of Jesus Christ. Although, she is physically absence from the body, her soul spirit is eternally with the KING OF KINGS and LORD OF LORDS, Jesus Christ. I rejoice that Miss Booth finished the race of life as faith servant of the Eternal GOD of the Bible and will receive for her eternal reward.
I will meet her in the throne room of our great GOD and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Though death can steal your loved one, it can never steal your love, it lives in your hearts, and it lives in your memories. May you hold fast those memories and they will help you to deal with this great loss. Life is so short and those we love are gone from our lives too quickly. May the God of loyal love comfort you during your time of sorrow. My sincere condolences on your loss.

Was very sad today to learn of Adrian's passing. I met her several times over the years in North Hollywood, and one memorable day was what would have been stooge Larry Fine's 100th birthday. She couldn't have been a more sweeter and classier lady. Another icon from Hollywood's Golden Age...
