Steven Holcomb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2017.
Steven Holcomb, an Olympic champion bobsled driver, died Saturday, May 6, 2017, in Lake Placid, New York, according to multiple news sources. He was 37.

The U.S. Olympic Committee and the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation announced his death, but the cause has not been released. Foul play was not suspected, however, according to officials.

Holcomb was a three-time Olympian, competing as a bobsled driver in Torino 2006, Vancouver 2010, and Sochi 2014. In 2010, he broke a 62-year drought, piloting the American four-man bobsled team to its first gold medal since 1948. He won bronze medals in both the four-man and two-man bobsled events in Sochi in 2014. He was expected to be a part of the U.S. team that would compete in the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

He was born in Park City, Utah, April 14, 1980. He began competing for U.S. bobsled in 1998.

His bobsledding career was threatened by a degenerative eye disease called keratoconus. He underwent surgery that saved his eyesight. He returned to international competition during the 2007-08 season and earned seven medals: three gold, three silver, and one bronze.

He wrote about his illness, battles with depression, and journey to Olympic glory in his autobiography, “But Now I See: My Journey From Blindness to Olympic Gold.”

U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun issued a statement: “The entire Olympic family is shocked and saddened by the incredibly tragic loss today of Steven Holcomb. Steve was a tremendous athlete and even better person, and his perseverance and achievements were an inspiration to us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve’s family and the entire bobsledding community.”

I am so sorry Steve has gone so soon. Too soon. But I will always be grateful for how he spoke up about his keratonocus and through his treatment with Dr Boxer Wachler helped me and many many others. Without Steve I would be blind today. A brave man. A true winner. A good person. May he rest in peace.

I would like to give my deepest condolences to the the Holcomb family for the loss of Steven. Steven, a man of extraordinary talent, despite the obstacle within his way was very determined and dedicated. Although Steven is gone, he isn't forgotten. Isaiah 49:15 helps us to appreciate that. The scripture itself helps illustrate the bond between a parent and her baby/child and the bond that out Heavenly Father had with each one of us as to not forget a single person.

Steve leaves behind a legacy, tributes, medals, honors and many fond memories in his life's journey. We extend our sincerest sympathy.

Dear Jean and Family,

You and your family have been on all of our minds and in our prayers, especially here at Valley View Elementary School in Bountiful, Utah. We never met your son in person, but after learning and studying his life for our school's musical, Good as Gold, we all feel like we know him and love him.

We hope you find peace and comfort through the family and friends close to you and from all of us here in Bountiful. We know that peace can come. I know we've never met, but I'm a mom and my heart is heavy for your loss. Steven was an inspiration to so many. The boys who played him on stage, as well as our entire cast, will always have a tender spot in their heart for Steven. As a school we feel honored to have shared his story and celebrated his accomplishments before his passing. We hope this brings comfort to you as well that his story didn't end on the bobsled track, but it lives on in the hearts of hundreds of elementary school aged children and their families.

My favorite song from the musical was sung between you and Steven as his eyes were dimming from the Keratoconus. The song was called Heaven keep the lights on. I've attached the lyrics and stage direction from the script below.

I know that Heaven kept the lights on for Steven and that he is in his Heavenly Father's loving arms and that his Heavenly Father was there for him that night, just as He is there for you now. You are not alone, Heaven's lights are on for you and we love you!

Let's please keep in touch. We love you so much!

Sincerely,

Tiffany Smith
Producer & Writer of Good as Gold

(Mother and son hug goodbye. After shutting the door, Steve stands facing audience just outside his home. His mother faces audience still inside home.)
SONG: HEAVEN KEEP THE LIGHTS ON

Steve's Mother:
Heaven keep the lights on for my son.

I just can't believe his work is done. Heaven keep the lights on

Show me where the light's gone. Can't you spare a little light

And help my only son tonight?

Steve:
Heaven keep the lights on one more night.

Tell me what I'm asking for is right. Heaven, can you be here?

Can you make my way clear?

Will you light the path ahead or keep me in the dark instead?

Both:
Heaven keep the lights on.

To the Holcomb Family,
There are no words that any one could say at this difficult time, yet which no body is not every prepared for the death of a love one. Also, you could find the comfort, strength of the memories that you had together, cherish them always. Steven's legacy will live on what he did. My thoughts, prayers are with you, your family.

May 11, 2017

My deepest condolences and prayers of comfort to Steve's family and all who knew him. I am so very sorry for your untimely loss. I remember the first time I met Steve, and the impression he left. I was a track crew worker at the Olympic Park in Park City, UT in 2002. He was up taking some training runs. He was very modest and unassuming. That day he needed someone to sit in and pull brakes for him for one last training run. I had never done that before, but offered to help. He was gracious, encouraging, and trusting as he explained what to do. I was nervous, but he had confidence in me. He gave us a smooth ride, and I managed to get the sled stopped. That experience with Steve would serve as a catalyst to my competing in bobsledding for the short time I did. You could say my confidence in sliding began with Steve's confidence in me. That is the Steve Holcomb I rememberhumble and great.

God bless until we meet again Brother,
